2nd best of the mystery rummy games,
This review is from: Jekyll and Hyde (Mystery Rummy, Case No. 3) (Cards)
For those unfamiliar with the Mystery Rummy games, the game is played using a special set of cards. The idea is to build melds (as in regular rummy), but game play is affected by a special set of cards that allow you to draw extra cards from the deck, score extra points, or allow you to retrieve cards from the discard pile. Each of the Mystery Rummy games uses slightly different mechanics and is based on a different mystery.Jekyll/Hyde is slightly more complex than Mystery Rummy 2 - Rue Morgue or Mystery Rummy 4 - Al Capone, however it is much more enjoyable than either. There are many more strategic decisions to be made which include choosing which melds to put into play and affecting the rules and the scoring by way of changing the orientation of the Jekyl/Hyde card. For those familiar with the game, the game only has 2 sets of gavel cards, and one unique gavel card to use in the game, which is in stark contrast to the numerous types of gavel cards in the original Mystery Rummy 1 - Jack the Ripper. While it would seem that so few gavel cards would limit player interaction, I was amazed at the strategic opportunities presented by the game. The game mechanics are much simpler than Jack the Ripper, but strategically, it is on par with Jack the Ripper. If you liked Jack the Ripper, you will enjoy this game.

It's such a fine line between a good man and a bad man...,

This review is from: Jekyll and Hyde (Mystery Rummy, Case No. 3) (Cards)
It's also a fine line between a good game and a bad game. Of course, this one is teetering on the edge. This is the third installment in the mystery rummy series. I love the concept behind these games, adding mystery and suspense to the classic rummy game.In this version, players follow Jekyll/Hyde on his quest. Players play melds, just as in the previous installments in the series. There is a Jekyll/Hyde card showing players which state Dr. Jekyll (or Mr. Hyde) is in. As in classic rummy, players attempt to play melds (three or more of the same card). Each meld is marked either Jekyll or Hyde and only melds that match Jekyll's current state can be played. There are potion cards that allow Jekyll/Hyde to change back and forth. At the end of the hand, only melds that match Jekyll's current state are counted for points. While I appreciate the unique game mechanic of the Jekyll/Hyde transformation, this version has been my least favorite of the three mystery rummy games. It is much harder, in my opinion, to regulate Jeyll's condition to use to your advantage and thus strategize against your opponents than it is in the other mystery rummy games. All in all, I would suggest Jack the Ripper or Murders in the Rue Morgue over this card game. However, if you like the myster rummy concept and want to experience all of the different flavors, this is not necessarily a bad game, just not as good as the others.
