A fascinating perspective into the life of Ferdinand LaMothe: a.k.a. Jelly Roll Morton.
Charters is not only one for whom Jelly Roll's significance is clear; his understanding of 20th century jazz and its development makes his imaginary memoirs that much more creditable and significant. Jelly Roll tries to single-handedly take the credit for the creation of jazz, but this work just shows him as human and real.
A must read: get the paperback.
