5.0 out of 5 stars The Genius At Work, January 10, 2002

This review is from: Jelly Roll Morton 1924 1926 (Audio CD)
This stunning CD is an embarassment of riches (actually,I'd give it 10 stars easily);the evolution of Morton's musical vision grew rapidly from 1924 on and the opening 4 tracks by a 1924 band enable us to hear the intricacies of Morton's polyphonic art at work, indeed, the other half of this CD is taken up by the superb 1926 Red Hot Peppers sides where Morton at last nailed it down definitively and this CD allows you to compare and contrast the 1924 AND 1926 sides back to back to study Morton's growth. But this CD is far from just study material into a great musical mind,- there's plenty of remarkable (and memorable)music here, from the beautiful clarinet obligatto in "High Society" (1924)to the almost Baroque opening cadenza of "The Chant"(1926) and on with revisions of "The Pearls" and "Wolverine Blues" to boot. The remastering (like all the Classics series)is above-average and there's enough revelation AND pleasure here to make this CD a sinfully affordable treasure.Be the first on your block to order your's now. Thanks to Amazon for performing such a service to the Jazz community by making CDs like this as widely and easily available as possible for all!
