Biography

Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton (September 20, 1885 – July 10, 1941) was an American ragtime and early jazz pianist, bandleader and composer.

Widely recognized as a pivotal figure in early jazz, Morton claimed to have invented jazz in 1902. Morton was composer of the first Jazz composition ever published, Jelly Roll Blues, in 1915. If you wanted to select just one Jelly disc out of the eight issued on the Chronological Classics, then this is the one. It features Jelly's last recordings, both his excellent piano solos and songs with "his boys." The sound is great. Get it!
