Another Naxos gem,

WOW! Naxos strikes again. I have purchased over 50 of their Early Music series and have yet to be disappointed. Whether Jenkins is late Renaissance or early Baroque he is one great composer for viol consort. The Rose Consort has recorded many Naxos CDs. Their playing is always warm and meaningful. Jenkins has composed fantasias and galliards for varying numbers of viols as well as combinations of viols with organ. They are each fully different but also share a warmth of composition. Each selection is a standout. Highly recommended.

John Jenkins Fantasias and Viols Music on Naxos,

Review coming shortly.John Jenkins fantasias and viols music on Naxos. A cross-section of Jenkins' oeuvre, excellently played by the reliably consistent and pleasing Rose Consort of Viols. Penguin Guide is very praising of this selection. Only full-price single cds of complete four-part and five-part consorts respectively, from Phantasm viols group, can compete - and the greater cost, and the singular attention of each disc to the one set of consorts makes for a far less interesting exploration. If you are new to Jenkins, this is a must-have starting point; if you are familiar with Jenkins and the music of his period, then this is a must-have appreciation of Jenkins output. Recommended. |
