5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible journey across the spectrum of inspirat'l music!
Jennifer Holliday returns to her gospel roots here in a way that makes it clear that she never really left. Every form of inspirational music is impeccably displayed in "On & On" - a feat few recording artists -gospel or secular- manage in their chosen genre. From soft, reflective ballads, to more rousing, mid-tempo numbers that give hint to her powerful...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Gospel Turn
Jennifer Holliday is one of the greatest underrated talents of our time. Her powerhouse voice is perfect for Broadway and Gospel style music. That being said, this album is straight ahead gospel and displays her passion for the subject matter. Jennifer Holliday returns to her gospel roots here in a way that makes it clear that she never really left. Every form of inspirational music is impeccably displayed in "On & On" - a feat few recording artists -gospel or secular- manage in their chosen genre. From soft, reflective ballads, to more rousing, mid-tempo numbers that give hint to her powerful voice like a Mustang idling at a traffic light, she thoughtfully and strategically tunes the listener up. By the end of the CD, we are given what I suspect she knows we were waiting for: a gut-wrenching, heart-stopping, truly "gospel" piece. Her spirit-filled testimonial cover of the gospel standard "It Is Well With My Soul" deserved a Grammy, Stellar, Dove among other awards. For that number alone, I know she will be richly rewarded in heaven. For old faithful J.H. fans, such as myself, and newcomers just discovering this awesome vocalist, "On & On" proves to be, pe! rhaps, the best display of Jennifer Holliday's amazing talent yet. With writer/producers the likes of Richard Smallwood, Orlando Draper, Diane Warren and others, Jennifer definitely came ready to make an (exclamation) point! In my view, this is a "must-listen."

Anyone who loves great singers will go crazy over this awesome DIVA who is the greatest singer in the music industry today while also being its best kept secret!!! Vocally this extraordinary singer can sing circles around anyone alive today and leave them gasping for air! Emotionally Jennifer is always right on target as well and equally at home with a soft smoldering ballad as she is with a rhythmic barnstormer. "On & On" is a great mix of everything and every song is done to complete perfection with glorious and breathtaking vocals. Mesmerizing is the opening "Let Jesus Love You" which Jennifer sings with so much depth and passion and towers brilliantly over a majestic gospel choir!! (and this is just the opener!!!) A wild organ and keyboard arrangement compliment a soulful Jennifer who goes into high gear with "I'll Praise His Name" again given spirited support from a great gospel choir. A gorgeous and heartfelt ballad "To Teach Me" reveals Jennifer's extraordinary vocal beauty and is a breathtaking classic that is incomparable. A great ride is the awesome title song "On & On" that is a stunner that flows and builds and builds and becomes Jennifer's Magical Musical Tour-De-Force that I hope was acknowledged with a Grammy Award!! If not, then they were really out of it!!! Any true music lover will find this collection totally stunning as this must be one of the greatest Gospel recordings ever made by a vocalist. Gutsy and soulful in the inspirational "In Spite Of It All" doing some amazing things in the upper range of her voice then rocking out in the driving rhythmic "Show Some Sign". "Healing Hands" is a masterful power-ballad that features a smooth yet powerful vocal from Jennifer that shows that this lady should be at the top of the charts as she does it better than anyone around!! For Motion Picture Themes, Miss Holliday would be awesome and create memorable classics!!! Another incomparable classic "It Is Well With My Soul" as Jennifer takes us on a brilliant musical journey ride of a lifetime on her glorious voice for just under ten stunning minutes! A beautiful spiritual celebration is the grand finale "Hallelujah, Amen!" which closes out one of the best all around vocal collections that I have ever heard and EXPERIENCED from ANY ARTIST!! BRAVO! Jennifer Holliday!! You are truly an awesome wonder and may everyone in the world have the opportunity to enjoy and EXPERIENCE your extraordinary talent!!! This is truly a MASTERPIECE!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, March 1, 2002
By A Customer

When I first heard this CD, I played it over and over again because it brought so much peace during the time of storm. Jennifer's version of "It Is Well With My Soul" is simply AWESOME! I hope she realizes how she has ministered to so many souls through her testimony in this song. I was very sad to know that one day I decided to listen to this CD and realized someone stole it. Since then, I have been searching to replace it, and to no avail, have not found it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Who let this MASTERPIECE go out of print?, February 17, 2006

This is one of the greatest of all modern gospel albums. It covers several different styles of black gospel, from ol' time traditional to the most cutting edge modern.

Holliday's vocals have to be heard to be believed ... the passion, the thunderous power, along with sudden moments of delicacy and the many tone colors her voice produces.

Released on a small label with no clout in the industry, it never got the attention it deserved. I was horrified that year when it wasn't even nominated for the Grammy, which went to the latest same-old-same-old from "Sounds Of Blackness".

It's true Draper's choir sounds a little weak and under-rehearsed at times, lacking the sharpness and punch they need to keep up with Holliday's spectacular leads. But with the wonderful songs and truly brilliant arrangements, that's easy to overlook.

Every single track on this album is great. There is no "filler". It's been a great pleasure to introduce ON & ON to gospel-loving friends who've never heard of it -- and to watch their jaws hit the floor as they listen.

Please somebody re-issue this masterpiece, one of the pinnacles of 20th century gospel music. And someone try to get Jennifer back in the studio to record a sequel ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Supreme, December 24, 2008
This review is from: On and On (Audio CD)
This is exceedingly - by far one of the best gospel compilations. Jennifer Holliday delivers a great collection of songs that prove not only that she can stand the test of time but that she can sing with the best of them - she is a true talented diva up there with Patti, Mariah, Aretha, Tina, Whitney, and Mahalia!

We need to see more of her. Record companies take note!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Industry Classic, July 6, 2007
This review is from: On and On (Audio CD)
If you like real gospel music, this is a must have. It's not the same old stuff you hear on the radio! From the classic sounds to the original lyrics, this CD took me through some very rough patches in life. And, There arent many who can compare to Jennifer Holiday with her strong vocals.

Jennifer Holliday is one of the greatest underrated talents of our time. Her powerhouse voice is perfect for Broadway and Gospel style music. That being said, this album is straight ahead gospel and displays her passion for the subject matter. The album is a bit low budget and the insrumental accompaniment is keyboard synthesizers, but it was produced for the love of the music. Some of the songs contain spoken sermon introductions but they really don't deter from the performances here. The label distrubuting this cd probably doesn't have an art department, which explains the rather spartan and somewhat dated photograph of Jennifer with unusually big hair. Never judge a book by it's cover.
