4.0 out of 5 stars JENNIFER'S BODY NOVEL

3.0 out of 5 stars An average-quality movie novel.
A curious aspect of the paperback-only novelization of "Jennifer's Body" is that it is 194 pages, yet I read it inside of one hour. The longest book of any significant length that I've ever finished in so small an amount of time. That's probably the most remarkable thing about it, as a matter of fact. 4.0 out of 5 stars JENNIFER'S BODY NOVEL, July 15, 2009
This review is from: Jennifer's Body (Paperback)
At first glance, i didn't see the blood-splatter on the cover and thought to myself: "This looks like a stupid book about an anorexic prostitute, and her teen angst!" But then, i realized the blood, and my new thought was: "HEY! That looks interesting!" i read the preview Amazon provided, and the next day i bought the book. I didn't read it real quick, still questionable about it's premise. "A teen girl possessed by the devil goes on a killing spree, and her "plain-jane" friend must stop her!" sounds pretty stupid. I then read at the bottom of the cover, that it was based on Diablo Cody's screenplay for the movie of the same title, i watched the trailer for the movie on Youtube, and started the book. I finished it in about 2 hours (1 hour and 45 minutes). So, this book is not for people who want a long story that will take them days. The book plays out like the film Titanic, meaning the majority of it, apart from the beginning and end, is a flashback. What i love most about this story is it's descriptions of characters and the gruesome scenes. So not for the people with a weak stomach (Even though the gore doesn't get too bad). It is also well written for a book that is about these cerain things (possession, murder, teens, etc.). What i don't like is that apart from being a story about possession and murder, there is still it's scenes of teen-angst and dating, and "what top should i wear tomorrow?" this is mainly a girl's book, and guys would like it for the action and gore. Good book, and recomended to anyone who thinks it sounds interesting, and to people who think it sounds like a stupid story should at least give it a chance.

3.0 out of 5 stars An average-quality movie novel., October 17, 2011

A curious aspect of the paperback-only novelization of "Jennifer's Body" is that it is 194 pages, yet I read it inside of one hour. The longest book of any significant length that I've ever finished in so small an amount of time. That's probably the most remarkable thing about it, as a matter of fact. Typically, a novelization of a video game or movie has greater detail and is more extensive than the original form. In this case, it's actually the other way around. Audrey Nixon, for some reason or another, decided to simplify the novel and format it in a way to make it more acceptable to a lower age level. Lower and mid teens, I guess, as opposed to upper teens. This, I feel, is the mistake that was made in the writing of this novel. Not a mistake. The mistake. It is never a good idea to have a film and its novel be meant for distinctly different audiences. People who saw the movie will be confused when they read the novel, and people who read the novel will, if they are even allowed, be rather rudely surprised when they see the movie.

Not that the two bear no resemblance to one another, however. Jennifer Check still kills boys and eats them, and Needy Lesnicky still brings her down in the end. But its told in a simpler and less graphic format than the movie- once again, the apparent fact that each was intended for a notably different audience leaps readily to mind. In one notable case, however, the novel did manage to include something the movie did not- indications of the truth about the band Low Shoulder, and more than just what the movie already showed us about their self-serving deal with Satan. What the novel shows us, towards the beginning and towards the end, is not just that Low Shoulder are not very good guys- they are *cowards*. I liked the fact that the novel manages to make Low Shoulder even more repulsive than they are in the movie. So that it did well.

Overall, this is more or less the events of the film "Jennifer's Body" in simplified, written form. I only recommend it if you really did like the movie, can find a copy at a low price, and don't open it up expecting too much. Meet those three requirements and you could certainly find worse ways to spend a few dollars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Faithful to the movie, but lacking realism in dialogue, December 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Jennifer's Body (Paperback)
I was eager to pick up the novelization of JENNIFER'S BODY after I found that one had been written. However, my excitement quickly dropped down a notch when I found out it was a young adult book, which immediately spelled dread. Much to my digress, I bought the book and read it within a few hours. While I am happy to say that it follows the movie to the T (and bridges events that didn't make sense in the movie,) the dialogue in the book was extremely unrealistic, particularly in regards to how Needy reacts to her boyfriend's eventual demise ('holy crap!' is not a proper phrase to use as your boyfriend is getting eaten alive.)

I would have loved to see a more adult approach to this story. It was obviously more adult-driven just based on the character Amanda Seyfried played in the film, which makes it hard for me to understand why the author would dumb it down for a more 'teen-friendly' audience (though I can blame the publisher for this.)

This is a fun book which can easily be read in a few hours. I might have enjoyed it more if I were a younger teen, but it isn't a bad book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trisha's Book Blog Review, January 10, 2010
This review is from: Jennifer's Body (Paperback)
This was a quick read, and for a YA book it was quit scary.
It starts off with a girl named Needy, and she is in a looney-bin. She then goes on to explain how she got in there and how her best friend Jennifer died.
I think my favorite part of the book was when Needy was explaining about her town, Devil's Kettle in the first chapter. She tells about a waterfall and how it opens up into a hole and disappears. They have tried throwing things down it and nothing comes back up. No one can explain why.
I love the cover of the book a well. The locket represents Needy and Jennifer's friendship and they each wear one. On the front cover and before each chapter there is blood splatter, I think it fits this book perfectly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fast paced book.., August 22, 2009

I really enjoyed this book, it was a quick read and drew me in from the first page. The humor in the book kept me smirking and I truly enjoyed myself as I read it. The storyline was very intriguing, it was definitely out there, and I like that. With this type of book, you either love it or hate it, and well I obviously loved it. I also know they're making this book into a movie, and so far the trailer looks like they stuck to the writing. So, I can't wait to see it! It comes out on September 18, 2009, I recommend you read the book first and then see it come to life in the movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, August 9, 2009
This review is from: Jennifer's Body (Paperback)
Jennifer and Anita, "Needy," have been best friends for years, since their sandbox days. They even have their own language.

But one night, at a concert for a local band, everything changes. Jennifer isn't the same anymore and it's up to Needy to figure out what happened and to take care of the problem.

Even when nobody (including her boyfriend) believes her.

This book read like a teenage slasher film - I could easily see it in my mind. I finished it in one sitting!

The book starts off with telling you that Anita is in jail, but you don't find out why until the very end. From reading the back cover of the book, you know something happens to Jennifer, but it was interesting to figure out just what that was. The very end left you hanging...I want to read what happens next.

JENNIFER'S BODY is based on the screenplay of the same name, and I look forward to seeing it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad slasher book, July 17, 2009

Ok, I hate doing negative reviews but I just plain didn't like this book. The wording in it was so--fake, for a lack of better words. The words that the main character spoke are not words that real teenagers use. For example, Needy was wearing low-rise pants and her boyfriend told her But, like I can see your womb." And they call hot guys "salty." It just didn't work for me. The plot seemed rush--it just seemed like it was trying to be a cool slasher book and it didn't work.

5.0 out of 5 stars I just LOVE IT!, May 22, 2010
This review is from: Jennifer's Body (Paperback)

Jennifer's Body

The title of my book is Jennifer's Body by Audrey Nixon, and is based on a screen play by Diablo Cody. I wanted to check out this book since I've already seen the movie, and I wanted to see if the movie was better than the book. The cover design of the book also looked kind of fun to me, because it had a gold-colored necklace, a lipstick kiss, and blood.
The book is about a very envied girl named Jennifer and her friend, Needy. The two girls go to lots of parties and get into a lot of fights. A quote that's shows us how rebellious Jennifer is, takes place when Jennifer has a pack of cigarettes and she says, "I can't wait till I get older so I can go to bars."
This book is unique because it allows me to visualize parties, fights, people going to bars, falling in love, getting thrown into a pool, and other crazy things students do in high school. This book is also one of its kind, because it is based on a movie, starring Megan Fox. The novel was written after the movie was made, even though it's usually the other way around.
Something I liked about Jennifer's Body was that there weren't any hard words. I liked that because I didn't have to sound them out or figure out the meaning, which allowed me to get through the book faster. The plot was interesting but sometimes it had too much violence and Jennifer and Needy were too crazy. This made me uncomfortable because it reminded me of people I know that do crazy things like: get drunk, start fights, and smoke cigarettes. I didn't see myself in the book at all because I don't go out to drink, smoke, or go out to clubs.
Audrey's Nixon's purpose for writing Jennifer's Body was to entertain teenagers. Whether someone is entertained depends on what type of teenager is reading this book. I would recommend Jennifer's Body to my family so they could read it, because they enjoy books and movies with action. I rate this book a six out out of ten because there's too much violence, which is something I really don't like.
