Anyone for giving Jennifer Lopez a reality smack?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Jenny From the Block (Audio CD)
If the laws regarding truth in advertising applied to music lyrics, Ms. Lopez would be behind bars right now. If she was still actually "Jenny From the Block," it would not occur to her to sing lyrics like "I used to have a little, but now I have a lot." For someone who has so relentlessly bent her life and her men to advance her career and then whine about "bad" publicity...C'mon, Lady, how dumb do you think we are? I can't wait for Weird Al to get hold of this one.

My girl Jenny Lopez.,

First of all, Jenny has never claimed to be Mariah Carey; Jenny is a simply a very good all-around entertainer. She also happens to be a nice Puerto Rican girl who got out of the projects. So why does everyone like to hate on her? Yes, it would be nice if she gave back more to the community, but does not doing so make her the spawn of Satan? Come on; give me a break! The bottom line is that this right here - while definitely not grammy material - is nevertheless an entertaining song. For those of you who insist on hating on her; just get over it already.

Mixed reviews...,

I like the beats, the rap and everything. What I don't like is that she has the ability to come off like a real person when she's really plastic. I mean she doesn't need to make this song to cover up for the dirt she keeps shoveling (stealing music, perfumes, etc). I get the feeling that she wants people to see her as a really down to earth girl, but she doesn't act like it. I have been a huge fan of hers since day 1 but now I am not intersted. and it's a shame cause she had some talent there.

Jenny's pretensions,
By
This review is from: Jenny From the Block (Audio CD)
This song rocks but why did i give it one star. For the very premise that J lo is just as pretentious as she ever is and she lacks confidence big time. Why is it that she has to reaffirm time and agian that she's real, she's alright and now she knows where she came from, that she's till the same Jenny from the Bronx. Nothing's more tired in the lyrics that the fact that she's from the Bronx. The rag to riches story is trite. Is she so under-confident she needs to reassure everyopne that she's pretty much the same as she always was? Cut the pretensions I would say! She's gonna be married three times in less than 3 years and she's as showy as she ever was. That's nothing to be proud of.As for her voice, it's not something impressive but she's not even trying to want to sound impressive. Basically j lo's songs are in a way her vocals dun need much stretching and when it does need to be strecthed on scaling ballads, she fails horribly. On Jenny, it's fine simply bcos there's nothing much for her to scale. Another sign that J lo is not sure of herself is that she can never hold a tune on herself, not enough to make a hit. Most of her last few hit releases feature a sad rapper intercepting her. Throw in some remixed grooves and beats and she's got a hit. Even her new song All I Have sees L L Cool J collaborating with her that's sad. At the end of the day, you'll never see a song from j lo not featuring any rapper and ultimately, no matter how good a tune is, j lo never carries it off fully! Lo and Behold, jenny is low.

Worst Song of the Year,
By
This review is from: Jenny From the Block (Audio CD)
This is the most unbearable song on the radio. You can almost hear her making up these cheesy lyrics! "Block rhymes with rock." Wow.. Also the guest rappers appear once again to insure airplay on R&B stations. Since it's a pop song they will have to yield to the requests of morons and play it too. I agree with Entertainment Weekly, this song should have been shelved and never released. Summed up in one word, this song is TACKY.

Bad Song, Worse Remixes,
This review is from: Jenny From the Block (Audio CD)
Not often does a song come along that's as catchy as Jenny From the Block, with its radio-friendly hooks that will reel you in. However (unless what you really want is just that), then listen to this: That's all Jennifer Lopez's material comes down to-the ability to hook you with the great beats. As far as her voice, it is either not present in a particular recording or it is, and if it is then that's why the recording is instantly unlikable. In this single, it's the former. So we get her voice, with layers upon layers of dubbing, revamping, remixing over it to the point that her voice doesn't show for what it is: a bad voice not capable of singing anything worthy of being sold. To top this cold fact off, the remixes here are horrible, and they're just made to hide the fact that she has a poor voice. The Bronx Mix is particularly annoying. She needs to stop this obsession with where she came from; that too is annoying. All in all, if you want to hear some good songs by talented female artists, pick up a CD from Mariah or Aaliyah, not this or the album for that matter.

Jenny from the block? Please!,
By Orson Lopez (Huntington Beach, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jenny From the Block (Audio CD)
Jennifer, or JLO, is just full of herself (...). How can she still be that girl who was in living color when she is ranked as the most demanding artist out there. She calls herself down-to-earth when she thinks she is a diva. Not only are the lyrics unworthy, but the collaborations are too. I am tired of her trying to be black and trying to be Mariah by having all these rappers in her songs. The only difference is that Mariah has the voice. She is not overshadowed by the rappers. On the other hand, JLO is unherd of in her own songs. So dont waste your money to buy this single, JLO is trying to sell an image she doesn't have.

this song SUCKS! how MANY times must jennifer REMIND us she is from the bronx? i know she's proud to be from the bronx, but good grief lay off saying it so damm much!this song reminds me of something i heard in the 80's it was a cross between early house and cotton candy much like this song! in this song jennifer tries WAY too hard to get the cliche message across of "please stay real" in her song Unfortenly for her this backfired on her! she may pretend to care, but does she really? she should take her own adivice for a change and knock it off with the cliche "stay yourself","be real" messages in her songs! cause this is the radio,clubs,mtv,vh1,muchmusic,etc were talking about here. skip this single...

Weak Song, Weak Message,
By
This review is from: Jenny From the Block (Audio CD)
Truly the most overrated, weak voice singer of the present, Jennifer Lopez returns to the music scene with this single where she sings about her roots. "Jenny From the Block" is Ms. Lopez's answer to critics who say that she has changed from a nice girl who grew up in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx, made it big, moved out to Los Angeles, and forgot about the people who made her. The truth is she has. This single which features Lopez's trademark weak vocals is a poor shout out to her neighborhood. The reality is that once one makes it big, they find greener pastures to graze on. Just like James Dean's character in the film "Giant," a bigshot forgets about the people who were there in the past for them. This song which mixes hip hop and pop is not original like many songs we hear on the radio, and unlike Lopez's past singles, this song will have very little chance of becoming a successful remix. With her front page hijinks and her numerous paramours, it is hard for me and many others to believe that Jennifer is still the same, old "Jenny From the Block." The days following September 11, 2001, New York City really needed all her native children to help this great city recover from an act of evil. Many stars answered that call, yet Lopez was no where in sight, preferring to remain in California. With this fact, this song is most geered to her biggest fans. In conclusion, a poor single with a weak message.
