Jenny Griaffe's Mardi Gras Ride,

This review is from: Jenny Giraffe's Mardi Gras Ride (Jenny Giraffe Series) (Hardcover)
I teach second grade and do a unit on Mardi Gras each year. This is by far the best book I have found to help children understand the terms and activities involved in Mardi Gras. I highly recommend it!

This review is from: Jenny Giraffe's Mardi Gras Ride (Jenny Giraffe Series) (Hardcover)
In this story about a personified giraffe's first Mardi Gras, the author packs a lot of information into a picture-book format. As a Louisianian turned Texas librarian, I wanted to teach my students about Mardi Gras. Jenny Giraffe learns about the entire Carnival season from Christmastime through the beginning of Lent. While this approach is thorough, it was somewhat overwhelming for children who had never experienced a Fat Tuesday celebration. The reader must first suspend disbelief about a giraffe calmly chatting with a human family, and then she has to follow this naive character through a study of Mardi Gras history, king cakes, krewes, parades and throws, symbology and finally Lent. By the end of the story, I was as tired as if I had endured the grand fete.
