We wanted a 4-cup coffee brewer to replace our 4-cup Cuisinart that dribbles when pouring.
We did not like the Jerdon. The lid on the carafe was difficult to remove and, worst of all, when the light went out, meaning it was done brewing, the coffee was still coming through. There was no way of telling when it was done dripping and there is no shut off when the pot...

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Coffee Maker with Great Carafe, September 7, 2009

This review is from: Jerdon First Class CM21B 4 Cup Coffee Maker, Thermal Carafe, Black (Health and Beauty)
I had this model under the Black and Decker brand for over 10 years and was very satisfied with it. My favorite point to this coffee maker was the insulated carafe. It kept the coffee hot enough until I finished the pot. It needed no burner to keep on or over-cook the coffee. The carafe's best feature was that it poured out without dribbling all over ( something most all coffee makers fail at ).

When the switch finally did break, I was given a gift of the Cusinart 4-cup cofeemaker with a stainless steel carafe. What a piece of junk it was. The carafe poured more coffee on the couter than the in the cup. Also, the warmer burned the coffee in the carafe ( YUK ). The Cuisinart lasted a few months and then broke ( YEAH - I could get rid of it without insulting the gift giver ).

I searched Amazon and found this Jerdon model which was the same as the Black and Decker which well-served me so many years. Of course, I bought it. When it arrived I could not have been more exicted - it was like Christmas morning to me.

The only difference from my original was the coffee grounds basket. The original had a cone-shaped basket, with a filter. The cone shaped filter does make a little better flavored coffee, with less grounds ( fortunatly I kept my old one for some reason and use it ).

I highly recommend this pot if you are looking for a small coffee maker. It works and the price is right. My only dislike is that it's not made in USA.

I've had this coffee maker for about 4 years before it broke. I used it 3-4 times a week and more often when we had company. I paid $25 for it at a black and decker store in Laughlin. It has been a great value and I was happy to be able to find it again on Amazon. I rated it 4 instead of 5 because my old one had a nylon/plastic filter that I could rinse and re-use. The new one requires paper filters. I just swapped the filter basket from my old coffee maker to the new one. It doesn't matter where this was built, it's a good product and I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Follow-up to my 2009 review Jerdon21B brewer, August 25, 2010
This review is from: Jerdon First Class CM21B 4 Cup Coffee Maker, Thermal Carafe, Black (Health and Beauty)
This follow-up review is in response to several reviewers' complaints and low ratings.

1. Use an 8-cup paper filter and appx. 3 Tbs. of ground coffee for each full 24 oz. of FILTERED water.

2. Descale the brewer every 2-3 weeks for optimal performance. Wipe off the sprayer to prevent clogging.

3. Room temp water will heat faster than cold. Fill the brewer up to 1/4" of the top which will produce appx 22 oz. of coffee. Refrigerated filtered water can be heated in the brewer for several minutes by leaving the cover up. Do NOT allow water to overheat. Tap the brew basket to evenly distribute coffee grounds.

4. When brewing is finished, wait several minutes for all the coffee to drip into the carafe, OR open brewer cover, fold down the paper filter over coffee grounds and press down with a spoon to extract all the liquid. Some liquid will remain in the carafe cover which should be rinsed with fresh water, tapped and allowed to drain. This brewer is designed to completely contain hot liquid and prevent exposure to cool air. The carafe and cover EXPAND when hot which is why it is somewhat difficult to remove the cover. Allow to cool down before removal.

5. The brewed coffee has been tested for freshness and quality after 24 hours. It tastes no different from the moment it was made because there is no burner/warmer to cook the coffee. However, to be on the safe side, refrigerate left over coffee and reheat in the microwave oven, or prepare iced coffee. Always check the carafe before brewing a fresh pot to make sure there is no left over beverage, because you cannot SEE the contents.

All in all I am very satisfied with this brewer even though it took a bit of time getting used to it. Incidentally, a standard coffee or tea cup measurement is 5-6 oz., while a mug can measure up to 12 oz. and thermos bottles even more. As stated above, this brewer will produce appx. 22 oz. of beverage using appx. 3 Tbs. of drip (medium fine) grind coffee.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb brewer!, October 16, 2009

At last, a drip brewer sans bells & whistles that makes a delicious cup of coffee. I have been able tp produce a very hot beverage and speed up the brewing time by using room temp filtered water (fill the tank and let stand overnight), and turning on the brewer while the cover is up to heat up the water until it's very warm. The "shower head" style spout wets all the grounds and there is no splashing or wash-up of grounds. The Jerdon First Class brewer tank will hold up to 24 oz. of water, leaving about 22 oz. of beverage. It can also brew coffee and tea pods. The metal-free carafe can be heated in the microwave; I tested it at one minute in a 1000 watt microwave and the handle remainded cool. If you don't need clocks, programming, and burnt-tire coffee that's been sitting on a warmer too long, then this is the brewer for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor design... not a 'thermal carafe' as advertised, March 9, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Jerdon First Class CM21B 4 Cup Coffee Maker, Thermal Carafe, Black (Health and Beauty)
I purchased this coffee maker to replace an older (14+ years!) Braun model which was getting noticeably slower despite repeated cleanings.

All I wanted was a no frills, four cup, coffee maker. The 'thermal carafe' was a bonus.

What I received was a unit, without instructions for use, which has a cheap plastic, double-walled carafe posing as 'thermal'. There were no starter filters included and those needed remain a mystery. I suspect that, being the type of appliance found in motel rooms, coffee pods are required.

I tried three pots of coffee with mixed results. None were drinkable...

I returned the coffee maker and purchased a model at WalMart. I ignore its digital timer and life is good!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Design - Needs a Better Carafe, December 9, 2010

This coffee maker has a design that makes it easy to fill with water without spilling any. This is due to the large reservoir and opening to the left top where the water goes. The percolator action is a bit slow but the quality of the finished coffee is good. My biggest complaint is the so-called "thermal" carafe. It has virtually no insulation and the brewed coffee will not stay warm for more than a few minutes. So if you plan to brew and immediately drink the coffee, it is fine. But if you leave any coffee in the carafe, it will get cold in a hurry. One other minor complaint is that there is not brew shutoff valve so you have to be careful that all the water has finished passing through the grounds before you remove the carafe.

This little coffee pot draws just 600 watts while brewing and it is made of plastic, its practicaly unbreakable. The low power draw and the insulated plastic pot make it ideal for use on a boat...which is where I use it. I run it off a 12 volt to 110 volt inverter, no problem. As a coffee maker for use at home it would not be acceptable; but it is great on the boat and it would work for a small RV or even camping. I would buy it again for the boat.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much to love!, March 4, 2011

This review is from: Jerdon First Class CM21B 4 Cup Coffee Maker, Thermal Carafe, Black (Health and Beauty)
This is an excellent small coffee maker. I bought it for the thermal carafe, and the thermal properties turn out to be very good, better than my much more expensive larger machine. The carafe does not drip when coffee is poured or when used to fill the reservoir, provided that the lid is in place. It brews quickly, and the coffee comes out at good, hot temperature and stays that way up to an hour. It makes two large mugs of coffee or three medium mugs. It seems ideal for a single person, and works well for two people who do not have time for multiple cups of coffee before leaving for work. The plastic basket that holds the coffee filter easily lifts out for carrying the used filter and grounds to the trash. And the black model shows no spots. While an automatic timer would be welcome, in reality, the coffee makes so fast that it is ready to drink by the time the bread is toasted and the juice is poured.
