Book Description

January 1, 1989 Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching & Preaching

This critical assessment of the book of Jeremiah enables the reader to rediscover many of the most profound and relevant features of Jeremiah's message and of the agonies and fears of those to whom it was first given. The picture that emerges of the prophet is an intensely moving one, often at variance with the conventional image of earlier popular reconstructions. Having witnessed the loss of most of the treasured and revered religious support of his day, Jeremiah discovered that the only secure foundation of hope is in God.

Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching is a distinctive resource for those who interpret the Bible in the church. Planned and written specifically for teaching and preaching needs, this critically acclaimed biblical commentary is a major contribution to scholarship and ministry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jeremiah commentary, June 26, 2009

This review is from: Jeremiah: Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching (Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching & Preaching) (Hardcover)
My husband and I are team-leading a Bible study on Jeremiah. The breath of fresh air is this commentary, which is well written, interesting, and doesn't appear to preach a particular bias - just presents information about the book of Jeremiah.

However, a warning on the class book and the downloadable leaders manual!

The leaders manual is juvenile. Our class of 35-to-50 year olds laughed at the idea of "arts and crafts." We haven't done any of that. They would be appropriate for kindgergarten-to-first graders, no kidding.

We are not particularly liking the IBS lesson book, either. The lessons are far too long for an hour class - actually too long for a 2-hour class! In addition, the authors appear to have such an extremely liberal focus that they will spend an entire (2+ hour) lesson preaching their cause . . . while completely ignoring what's actually in Jeremiah. We have had to create at least one lesson from scratch, as a result. Some of the chapters are pretty good, albeit too long, but our class is interested in studying Jeremiah, not one of the authors political views.
