Book Description

10 and up5 and up
When Matthew Clemens ventured into the churchyard to gather information about the Cornish miners buried there, one gravestone in particular seemed to call his attention. The inscription was to Reuben Visick and his two eldest sons, all three killed in a mining accident more than a hundred years before. But below the inscription were the words that echoed again and again in Matthew’s head: “And to Jeremy Visick, His Son, Age 12, Whose Body Still Lies in Wheal Maid.” The lines were as clear to Matthew as if he’d heard them spoken. Night after night they drew him to the churchyard, or to the outbuilding behind the Clemens home, where Jeremy Visick had lived, until Matthew began to sense that somehow his destiny and Jeremy Visick’s were inexorably intertwined.
Jeremy Visick is an irresistible and gripping adventure story about loyalty and one boy’s commitment to another across time.

About the Author

David Wiseman lives in South Yorkshire, England. It was a graveyard near his former home in Cornwall, at the edge of what was once the world's largest copper field, that inspired him to write Jeremy Visick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Terrific Historical Fiction, August 15, 2001
By
JAL "jlwest" (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jeremy Visick (Paperback)
Maybe historical fiction isn't everyone's cup of tea. But I've been a Buyer at one of the largest children's bookstores in the country, and I can tell you without a doubt that hand-selling this book to kids & parents has been a real pleasure - I've had many kids come back & tell me that they want another just like it! It is a great read-aloud, full of excitement and adventure (though it isn't an easy, shallow book - it's not just a page-turner, it requires some reflection) and it also makes you cry. There are great lessons here (though it isn't harsh & didactic) about the hard lives of Welsh miners, so that children can begin to think about their own privileges, or about their own hardships. Gradually, the veil of difference between people of different experiences begins to be lifted. And isn't that what great literature does? Beautifuly told, this is a real unsung treasure, and it should have won some major awards when it came out. You won't be sorry if you buy it - I especially recommend it to teachers. Read it aloud to your kids!

5.0 out of 5 stars Night Visitor, January 7, 2012
By
Rebecca Newth (Fayetteville, Ar, (summer resident of Michigan and Connecticut)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jeremy Visick (Paperback)
Jeremy Visick is a wonderful book and I cannot figure why it is not better known. It is well-paced and always sustains its suspense. The tone is perfect to the subject. The way the main character travels back in time is handled reliably and carefully. It is believable and real 'art'. I hope more people will read this book.
