2.0 out of 5 stars This book had no real apeel to me, or to anyone my age.
I didn't like this book. What 13 year old girl would enjoy it? This book is for boys, and i was forced to read it for english, why do teachers pick books like this that have a masculine outline to them? i didn't even want to finish the book. If i was a boy and i was ten, then maybe i would have liked the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Terrific Historical Fiction, August 15, 2001
By
JAL "jlwest" (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jeremy Visick (Paperback)
Maybe historical fiction isn't everyone's cup of tea. But I've been a Buyer at one of the largest children's bookstores in the country, and I can tell you without a doubt that hand-selling this book to kids & parents has been a real pleasure - I've had many kids come back & tell me that they want another just like it! It is a great read-aloud, full of excitement and adventure (though it isn't an easy, shallow book - it's not just a page-turner, it requires some reflection) and it also makes you cry. There are great lessons here (though it isn't harsh & didactic) about the hard lives of Welsh miners, so that children can begin to think about their own privileges, or about their own hardships. Gradually, the veil of difference between people of different experiences begins to be lifted. And isn't that what great literature does? Beautifuly told, this is a real unsung treasure, and it should have won some major awards when it came out. You won't be sorry if you buy it - I especially recommend it to teachers. Read it aloud to your kids!

5.0 out of 5 stars Night Visitor, January 7, 2012

This review is from: Jeremy Visick (Paperback)
Jeremy Visick is a wonderful book and I cannot figure why it is not better known. It is well-paced and always sustains its suspense. The tone is perfect to the subject. The way the main character travels back in time is handled reliably and carefully. It is believable and real 'art'. I hope more people will read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking story, November 28, 2010
This review is from: Jeremy Visick (Paperback)
Matthew Clemens is a schoolboy who thinks the study of history is a waste of time. When his teacher sends him to the local churchyard to copy the inscription on a particular stone, Matthew is inexplicably drawn to a different part of the cemetery, where a gravestone memorializes a family tragedy.

It would spoil the story to describe what happens next, but I will say that I enjoyed this book immensely. It has a compelling plotline, and the short childhood and daily hardships faced by children in the past stand in sharp contrast to the high standard of living and large amounts of leisure time enjoyed by children in the present. Exciting, well written, highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good Halloween read, October 15, 2009
This review is from: Jeremy Visick (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. My son read it at school in his 8th grade English class. He knows how much I enjoy a good ghost story and urged me to read it. Even though there are no surprises it is still a good read. It was clean, historical, and creepy enough to keep me interested. Good stuff!

I read this book when I was in elementary school and still regard it as one of my favorite books I've ever read. A sad book, but very good. You will not be dissapointed by reading this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book!, December 26, 1999

I've been trying to find this book for years - I remember it from about 50 readings as a kid. I found it exciting, moving and real, and it opened up new interests in past lives, history and time travel. The history is well researched and well drawn, and the characters highlight how universal childhood is. Brilliant.
