Smells somewhat like tan lotion-but it isn't bad.

I've been experimenting with self-tanners all year, and I think I can safely declare this one the winner. It's fair to say that any self tanner is subject to the limitations and/or variations of one's skin, so 5 different people using the same lotion may end up with 5 different results. Without question, it's a pain to go through the process of elimination. I believe I've bought and thrown away several varieties of self tanners, frustrated with either the color, the streaking and/or the uneven fading. But if you're as pale and bruised as I am (thanks to my Irish background and my playful Boston Terrier), eventually finding a tanner that gives one some healthy color is worth the aggravation.

Unlike the others I have tried ~ both expensive and drug store brands ~ Jergens Natural Glow provides a natural color, one that prompts people to ask me, "Did you go on vacation?" I'm a gardener so my forearms tan naturally, and I used that color to judge my self tanners, doing my best to try and match the rest of my body with my golden brown arms. While many tanners do offer some pretty deep color, either the color is too "self-tanner-ish," too dark (which looks silly on me) or it fades unevenly despite consistent efforts to exfoliate and moisturize. I had NONE of these problems with Jergens. The color development was gradual and healthy-looking, streaking has never been a problem, and it fades like a natural tan.

I haven't found the smell to be as offensive as regular self tanners, probably due to the fact that the lotion is made for a more gradual color development. Don't get me wrong...there is a faint odor, but on me it doesn't produce that wretched smell for which self tanners are well known.

It does the job, but there are some things to consider first:

1) 1 application stays on exfoliated skin for 2-3 days (if you shower and shave each day), if not - much longer
2) It works overnight
3) It smells like tanning lotion smells... not right away, but after about 10 minutes
4) no gloves required for application if you wash hands after use
5) I'm a red head with lighter skin than most of the population, but medium color works best for me

I've been using Jergens Natural Glow tanning lotion off and on for the last few years. I love the versatility of it. If I know I have an event coming up or am going to be wearing my swimsuit for something I plan to start using my lotion a few days ahead of time so I have a nice, subtle tan by the time I want it. With one application I may have a very slight tan, but with 2+ days of application it's much more noticeable. I also apply it twice a day if I'm trying hard to get a tan. I used to go to tanning beds when I was in my late teens, early 20's, but now I worry about the long term health effects, so this is my substitution. I've also done some airbrush spray tanning, which I think is awesome, it gives a very nice, heavier tan, but is much uglier when it comes off and is much more expensive. It's uneven and splotchy after 5-7 days, wearing off pretty fast in higher friction areas (inner thighs, in between breasts, ect). So that makes me prefer the Jergens for the majority of my tanning needs. Here's a few bullets on what I like and don't like about this lotion:

The good:
-Effective: It works well and the color looks natural, not orange or fake.
-Usually no lines or uneven spots: This is the advantage to using a lotion that just tans a little bit with each application. If you miss a spot one time or do it uneven, it isn't obvious at all and usually the next time around you'll cover that spot and everything will look great.
-Safe: I haven't read any studies or any literature that questions the safety of products such as this. That is a huge bonus to me!
-Inexpensive: at $7-8 a bottle this is much cheaper than spray tanning. One bottle lasts me roughly 15 applications over my whole body (totally an estimate, I've never counted).

I gave this 3 stars because I got the wrong color and had a bad experience at first. I'd give it 4 stars for the light/medium version.
This product is good for darker skinned people with warm undertones to their natural skin. I bought this product in the medium/dark color first but found out after two applications that it was the wrong shade for my skin. It looked natural at first but when I woke up the next morning, my skin was orange and streaks were really apparent on my ankles. I got rid of the streaks on my ankles with acetone nail polish remover and exfoliation. I'm caucasian and get pretty tan during the summer but right now my skin is on the lighter side. My skin has warm yellow undertones. I returned the dark shade and bought the light/medium color instead (plus the light/medium face version). The light color is better if you haven't developed a tan yet. If you have light skin and opt for the medium/dark, you'll probably turn orange and have an obvious tan after one use. Keep in mind that the color takes hours to develop, so only apply one coat on the first day. The color will be more obvious later, so be patient. Anyway, make sure you choose the right shade and start with the light if you aren't sure.
The product does develop a smell after a few hours, even though it's advertised as having "no odor". I think if you put it on at night after showering and exfoliating then just quickly shower the next morning, the smell should rinse off. I don't mind the slight odor but some people might. Don't mix this with perfume. Shower daily and use deodorant to keep yourself smelling clean and not perfume-y.
Before using either shade of jergens daily natural glow, exfoliate a lot. Pay extra attention to your knees, elbows, ankles, and any other joints.
