Jericho Jackson: corporal, medic, nomadic desert leader,
By
This review is from: Jericho [VHS] (VHS Tape)
In JERICHO, Paul Robeson portrays a military medic (Cpl. Jericho Jackson) who disobeys orders and rescues six black soldiers trapped on a torpedoed ship. Jackson is then forced to defend himself from an attacking sergeant; the man falls, hits his head and dies and Jackson is imprisoned to await a court martial death sentence. When he's released from the brig for a Christmas Eve celebration, the corporal goes AWOL into the North African desert, where he falls in with a nomadic tribe and becomes their leader. Curiously, the proudly elegant Robeson sings "Shortnin' Bread," plus two of his original compositions. Robeson's wife (Eslanda) appears as a tribal princess.
The same year "Jericho" was released (1937), Paul Robeson also starred in KING SOLOMON'S MINES. (VHS version) Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 viewer poll rating found at a film resource website.
