"They call me 'Rubberneck!'",
By Michael Crane (Orland Park, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jerky Boys (Audio CD)
Now, this is a hilarious album that brings back memories. While going through my ridiculously large CD collection, I stumbled upon this gem. I hadn't listen to it for a long time, so I decided to take a stroll down memory lane. And what a great stroll it was! "The Jerky Boys" is one of those priceless classics that can never be duplicated. This was the album that introduced the world to two hilarious pranksters and their amazing creations.Let's face it, anybody can do a prank call. It's not that hard to do. However, that does not mean that anybody can do a GOOD prank call. These guys are improv geniuses, and they can never know what to expect. Great characters like the annoyed and always ticked off Frank Rizzo, or the always injured and paranoid Sol Rosenberg. There's the openly... er... "happy" Jack Tor S who is always looking for a whacky job. And who can forget Tarbash; the Egyptian Magician and an unfortunate victim of dental malpractice. That's only to name a few. Since this is the very first album from the Jerky Boys, all of their characters were still not yet fully developed or completely solid, but they each showed overwhelming promise. You knew that we would be hearing more from these characters in the future, and of course that is what happened. Still, this album is absolutely hilarious and never seems dated. The two most developed and memorable characters are Frank Rizzo and Sol Rosenberg. Even years later, this album still had the power to make me laugh as if I were hearing it all for the first time. It goes without saying, this album isn't intended for those who get offended easily. Lots of profanity and adult humor can be found on almost every track. While I pretty much enjoy every call, my favorites are "irate tile man," "laser surgery," "sol's glasses," "car salesman," "super across the way," "the home wrecker," "dental malpractice," "hurt at work," "firecracker mishap," "punitive damages," "piano tuner," and everybody's favorite, "uncle freddie." "The Jerky Boys" is one of those classics that will never seem dated or tiring. It's always funny and outright hysterical. If you haven't checked these guys out, then this would be a great introduction to them. There may be a bunch of wannabes in the world, but we all know that there can only be one Frank Rizzo! Now, go grab your toolbox and enjoy these calls, Jerky! -Michael Crane

The first Jerky Boys release, and one of the best!,
By
This review is from: Jerky Boys (Audio CD)
The Jerky Boys were my first exposure to the "crank call" CD phenomenon, and at their best, the Jerky Boys perform better than many of their crank-calling peers who have followed suit with their CD releases of their own. What I like about these Jerky releases is that most of their calls leave the person on the other line puzzled or bewildered. This, in my opinion, is what makes these pranks fun, as opposed to some of their counterparts (Musacha, Tom Mabe), who have a crass and mean spirit behind many of their calls. It's as if they intend to upset their victims rather than merely "play a prank." This is not to say that Los Jerkys have never made mean spirited calls that have turned me off..yes, they are guilty! But the majority of their work on the first three CDs have these rich and hysterical characters looking for the wrong kind of help in all the right places. Prime examples on this first CD would be the nasal voiced Sol Rosenburg calling to arrange an eye exam, Tarbosh "The Egyptian Magician" explaining in broken English his magic act to a club owner, and Jack Tors, the Gay Runway Model, trying to convince a talent agent that his performance art used in runway is appropriate! Prank phone call CDs are not everybody's cup of tea. If the cup of prank tea does sound appealing, and you never heard such an album before, this premiere CD by The Jerky Boys is a good place to start.

You will laugh in spite of yourself,

Yes, it's juvenile, but it's also one of the funniest CDs you'll ever hear. Ever fantasize about telling off the hiring manager you're speaking to over the phone? The Jerky Boys live out that fantasy. Utterly hilarious.
