Editorial Reviews

Using the astonishingly fresh music of Jerome Kern and the lyrics of over a dozen of his collaborators, including Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Fields, and P.G. Wodehouse, The Land Where Good Songs Go weaves the stories of three couples into a theatrical song cycle that sparkles with wit, tenderness, and warmth. A cast of top Broadway talents -- Kate Baldwin, Heidi Blickstenstaff, Rebecca Luker, Philip Chaffin, Graham Rowat and Matthew Scott -- offer delectable renditions of over 30 Kern songs, for which music director David Loud provides brand new vocal arrangements and orchestrations: standards such as "A Fine Romance", "Long Ago (and Far Away)" "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," and "The Way You Look Tonight," as well as forgotten tunes like "An Irish Husband," "Bill's a Liar," "We're Crooks," "The Subway Express," "Ain't It Funny...?" and "Never Marry a Girl."

Wikipedia defines "jukebox musical" as a stage or film musical that uses previously released popular songs as its musical score". I've never liked them very much, particularly when a plot is created and songs written as pop songs or songs from other shows are awkwardly shoehorned in. I'm beginning to realize, though, that I particularly don't like jukebox musicals when I don't like the songs. I'm not a rock and roll kind of guy, so shows like ROCK OF AGES or MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET are automatically on my stay-at-home list. On the other hand, I've always liked ABBA songs, do so I don't mind MAMMA MIA. Also, I've really enjoyed productions of MARRY ME A LITTLE, a compilation of Sondheim trunk songs, and AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' introduced me to the music of Fats Waller.

This is all a prelude to comments on PS Classics' THE LAND WHERE THE GOOD SONGS GO, a new 2-CD recording of songs with music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by several of his collaborators. The booklet includes a synopsis of the plot into which the songs fit. Thus it really is a form of jukebox musical. I officially don't care! I love the songs of Jerome Kern - I guess "I'm Old Fashioned". The show includes a few standards, including "All the Things You Are", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", and "Long Ago and Far Away". The classic "Bill" is here, though in its pre-SHOW BOAT form with only the P.G. Wodehouse lyrics. I could single out some individual songs - the medleys of "In the Heart of the Dark" and "Just Let Me Look at You"; "Till the Clouds Roll By" and "Look for the Silver Lining"; songs new to me, particularly comic songs like " Ain't it Funny What a Difference a Few Drinks Make", "Bill's a Liar", and "Never Marry a Girl with Cold Feet". Even when some of them have been re-arranged, I just don't mind.

PS Records - a small (but high quality) independent label has been releasing wonderful albums of "show music" - both Broadway and off- for many years. Under the direction of record producer Tommy Krasker and his partner, singer Philip Chaffin, I've discovered show that came and went before a "cast album" was recorded as well as a few shows that were recorded before any physical production was staged. They get the best arrangers and the best singers (some , like Rebecca Luker and Chaffin himself) are well known in the theater world but I find new ones each time I hear a PS album.

This 2-CD is a tribute to the music of Jerome Kern and contains his best known songs ("The Last Time I Saw Paris:, "A Fine Romance" but quite a few which appeared in obscure "revues" (like "The Caberet Girl", which produced the song "Dancing Time"). And that is where I found the most enjoyment. The Kern song "Bill" is here. We know that title from Show Boat. But the version here is the one Kern wrote with P.G. Wodehouse for for the show "Oh Lady! Lady!" a few years bore "Show Boat". And the songs are cleverly sequenced so that "Bill" is followed by "Bill's A Liar" composed 10 years before the Kern Wodehouse collaboration. In all there are more than 30 songs on the 29 tracks (a few are medleys).
Producer Krasker decided that the "revue" needed a plot and so the songs are arranged to tell the story of three couples who fall in and out of love. The enclosed 12 page booklet provides a one-page synopsis but it didn't make a lot of sense to me and, after the first listening, I ignored that text and just enjoyed the Kern gems - especially the ones new to me. I'm not sure if there are plans to stage the show, utilizing the plot, but that may be in the works.

This one is great if you like Broadway, show tunes or what is referred to as the Great American Songbook. It is even better than I had anticipated. I had seen Rebecca Luker in Sound of Music and it was her name on the album that caught my eye. The entire cast is wonderful. Am thankful that quality music is still being recorded.

This is a wonderful recording of many of the show songs of Jerome Kern, some familiar but many unfamiliar, at least to me. All of the songs are enchanting and the orchestrations are terrific. The voices are uniformly splendid. I highly recommend this CD for all Broadway original cast fans.

The music of Jerome Kern, once the grand daddy of American popular music has gone out of style. Aside from possibly 20 of his greatest hits not much is heard or recorded of his ouvre, which is a shame, because there is much more lurking beneath the surface that is worthy of a music maven's attention. John McGlinn's recording of "Sitting Pretty" on New World Records is one of my favorite show recordings, each little known song a gem. We owe Tommy and Phillip, owners and producers of PS Classics a thank you for this delightful album, and an advanced one for a recording that is due out in a few weeks (Rebecca Luker singing more Jerome Kern). The arrangements are quite good, the singers all excellent, ok Rebecca Luker is more than excellent especially in this repertory which is why I am so looking forward to her soon to be released solo album, and we are introduced to many unknown Kern tunes, mostly novelty items. Let me add my voice to the other reviewers, this set is highly recommended. One thing about PS Classics, they don't make junk ever!
