This review is from: Jersey Blues (Audio CD)
This is a partial recording (the full show circulates) of what was an Art Blakey ensemble group recording from 1969 featuring future notables such as Carlos Garnett and of course Woody Shaw. However, not just by historical information but by the direction of the ensemble this could clearly be determined as an Art Blakey recording (as well it is a re-release of a long out of print Art Blakey lp "Mellow Blues"). Since this is the only extent official live recording of this particular Art Blakey line up this may of interest to Art Blakey collectors as detailed in:
Hard Bop Academy but it would not be a release to seek out as for a Woody Shaw live recording and as well although the music clearly if more audible is of excellent quality (the semi free jazz Art Blakey was experimenting with at the time captured in a previous line up with the far more recommended: Live! at Slug's, N.Y.C. If the entire evident recording (which includes Woody Shaw's own composition "the Moontrane") were remastered as to the sound quality that would make this far more of interest. As of now it is a truncated reissue that leaves much to be desired. |
