Very Successful Tribute To Gerry Mulligan, February 28, 2004

Gerry Mulligan would have loved this CD. Not only does it honor him by including 8 of his tunes, but also the wonderful ensemble sound & spirit achieved by Kerry Strayer's arrangements for the septet reminded me of Mulligan's best work with his own groups. The title song, Jeru Blue, by Kerry Strayer is beautiful and very much in keeping with the theme of this CD. In addition, Kerry's baritone sax style is very pleasing, relecting, to my ear, the warmth and expressiveness of Mulligan himself.
Other members of the septet include Randy Brecker - trumpet & Fugelhorn, Dean Johnson - bass, John Mosca - trombone, Ted Nash - tenor sax & flute, Ted Rosenthal - piano, & Ron Vincent - drums.
Rather than making this a long review by discussing every song, I'll just leave it that this is a beautiful CD - definitely worth being in your collection.
