Editorial Reviews

Jerusalem shows the Swedish Classic Hard Rock/Power Metal favorites at their best, both in songcraft and in production, bringing in Daniel Bergstrand (In Flames, Meshuggah) for the mixing. Jerusalem is by far the most ambitious album from Astral Doors and the concept of the lyrics is darker, more political and more provocative than ever before.

Jerusalem is the sixth full-length release from Swedish traditional/power metal band Astral Doors. Of all the bands in the European power metal scene, Astral Doors, which features Wuthering Heights vocalist Nils Patrick Johansson, is the one that is most obviously following in the footsteps of the late Ronnie James Dio (RIP). Everything about their albums - from the song structures to the lyrics and especially the vocals - are Dio-inspired, and that's true of Jerusalem as well.

If you're at all familiar with the Astral Doors sound, you pretty much know what to expect from Jerusalem. It's an old school heavy metal album that combines heavy rhythms with powerful melodies and plenty of lyrics about battles, crusades and the power of rock. These lyrics are hammered home by Johansson's thundering voice, which more than once will make you believe Dio is still with us, especially on the Rainbow-esque "Child of Rock n' Roll" and the epic "Lost Crucifix." It's fun stuff, especially for fans of the `80s power metal sound, but it does get a bit predictable, much like the average Axel Rudi Pell album. Jerusalem is great for banging your head, but doesn't really rise above the very crowded European power metal pack.

It's nothing particularly groundbreaking, but Jerusalem is a perfectly solid heavy metal album, and is about what I've come to expect from Astral Doors. If you're already an Astral Doors fan, chances are Jerusalem will not disappoint. If you're more of a casual fan, you're probably better off sticking with the Testament of Rock best of collection.

New Astral Doors highly recommended.
Listen Astral, you do see in my question something about pre-ordering the cd, right? So, how, in your mind anyway, would you plan on someone listening to the cd if it hasn't, and won't even be released until 1-31-12 in the USA...and sound clips aren't even available??? I don't know what you've... Read More
