Book Description

June 1999 Great Cities
When the Jebusites built Jerusalem around 2000 BC, it seems improbable that they ever envisioned the impact this city would have on the history and destiny of the human race. Against its historic background, with ancient ramparts alongside souvenir boutiques, people of many races and ethnic origins all try to buy a few drops of water from the Jordan or an olive branch as a precious souvenir of this holy city.

Bells toll from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, while muezzins call for prayer in the Mosque of Omar and the Jewish faithful cry out at the Wailing Wall, in a blend of religious expression found nowhere else in the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A City in Triplicate, February 2, 2011

This review is from: Jerusalem (Great Cities) (Hardcover)
This lovely, large volume is a photo review of Jerusalem. The font is large and attractive. Some pages are hard to read as the text is superimposed on the photographs. The book reviews the history of the city in a a comprehensive nutshell. The sectors of the present city are also described according to the people who live in them. The three religions that claim this holy city (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) are treated in a balanced and objective fashion. I especially liked the description of the Armenian quarter. This book is a conceptualization of Jerusalem rather than a guide book. Topics are handled broadly without many specific details or recommendations.
