Book Description

February 19, 1997
Jerusalem and the Holy Land Rediscovered is comprised of 123 tinted and watercolored lithographs produced by the British artist, David Roberts, one of the first artists to travel extensively throughout the Holy Land in 1839.
Traveling from Egypt across the Suez to Mount Sinai, Petra, and Jerusalem, Roberts produced a large corpus of drawings and watercolors of all the major holy sites. These works formed the basis of the tinted lithographs published soon after his return to England, a collection which enjoyed immense popularity in England and the United States and provided the public the first glimpse of the biblical landscape and monuments known only by name.
This book reproduces for the first time in full color all 123 of Roberts’s lithographs along with the unabridged text by the Reverend George Croly, L.L.D. that accompanied the prints when they first appeared in 1842. Reproduced from one of the best preserved sets in the world, this rare edition has been in a private collection in Maryland since the 1850s and was recently acquired by the Duke University Museum of Art.

A foreword by Michael P. Mezzatesta, director of the Duke Univeristy Museum of Art, and a preface by Dennis Campbell, dean of the Duke University Divinity School are also included.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous book, by a great artist, January 22, 1999

This review is from: Jerusalem and the Holy Land Rediscovered: The Prints of David Roberts (1796–1864) (Hardcover)
This book reproduces the original travel book created by David Roberts in the early 1800s. Though not as large as the original book, the reproductions are quite large and beautifully done. David Robert's lithographs are magical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jerusalem and the Holy Land - Book of Prints, October 25, 2009

This review is from: Jerusalem and the Holy Land Rediscovered: The Prints of David Roberts (1796–1864) (Hardcover)
We received this book/shipment as scheduled/promised and in very good shape. We saw copies of some of the prints in the Nasher Art Museum at Duke University and wanted to see them all for ourselves. The book is quite comprehensive, with essays and reviews by scholars. The prints represent scenes around the Holy Land and surrounding areas from an early 19th Century perspective and, of course, contrast very drastically from today's Israel, which my wife and I saw on tour in 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true vision of the holy land., October 22, 1998
This review is from: Jerusalem and the Holy Land Rediscovered: The Prints of David Roberts (1796–1864) (Hardcover)
Roberts portrayal of the holy land as it appeared thousands of years ago brings to life what once could only be described by the words of the bible. A visit to the mid-east would not be complete without first studying Robert's book. One's perspective as they visit the holy land would then blend today's rituals with that of the past.
