RED SILK (1999) - When a pair of down-on-their-luck and over-the-hill female private detectives stumble through an art smuggling caper and end up in a kidnap & murder scheme, they throw both caution and common sense to the wind and attempt to turn a profit instead of solving the crime. Long-time life-partner and muse Lina Romay stars as one of the crooked gumshoes in what appears to be, to my knowledge, the first foray into comedy from outlaw auteur fringe-filmmaker Franco, with typically mixed, convoluted results. `Not at all what I expected, so it's difficult for me to be objective about, as it left me scratching my head, but little else. It's only on the radar for Francophiles; everyone else will hate it. I could see how the legions of Lina Romay fans would see something of value here, as she's always on display. As she always is. I can't even count how many sordid video vehicles he's written for her through the decades. But a comedy from Jess? The film's only merits may lie in the fact that this time the laughs are intentional.

SNAKEWOMAN (2005) - This is another One Shot Production film that's actually a cut above most of their Franco collaborations. It's a very loose remake of Franco's own 'Vampyros Lesbos' with the vampire woman being replaced by the title character. A female reporter (Fata Morgana) goes off to research an 87-year-old woman (Carmen Montes) who was believed to be a 'snakewoman'. When the reporter arrives, she finds the woman to be much younger than possible and soon the elder woman has the reporter involved in a lesbian tryst. (These are both mandatory and welcome in Jess's works). The silver screen temptress is not only still youthful and beautiful, but also some sort of succubus. (There's no sign of a 'snakewoman' except for a tattoo).

This is my first introduction to the newer Jess Franco films which I have read about here and there these past years. The other review by Anthony C. Rubbo is spot on. They are shot on cam-corder with some film appearing sparsely , the acting is fair to mediocre but the music scores are really awesome with jazz and progressive rock themes which could be listened to on their own. The first 'RED SILK' seems like its a modern day adventure utilizing his heroines from the sixties Diana and Regina of the 'RED LIPS' series and cloning them into Lina Romay and Lulu Laverne with much more nudity and eroticism. The script and direction all utilize Franco pseudonyms Clifford Brown and David Khunne but you know he's behind the camera plus the girls boss is dubbed with Franco's voice which is really hard to understand because of his heavy accent. It is a long undertaking with the camera lingering on some of Jess's favorite female body parts (it's amazing how Lina Romay looks so hot for her age giving new meaning to the 'cougar' term) but a must for Franco completists with its tongue in cheek humor. The better of the two is 'SNAKE WOMAN' a highly erotic, trance-like experience that only Franco could produce and dare to unleash. I thought parts of his film from the mid-nineties 'TENDER FLESH' was steamy but this one beats it. Almost a remake of his 'VAMPYROS LESBOS' , this film explores a woman's sexual awakening through an erotic succubus who will stop at nothing in taking possession of our heroine. This film has to be seen on its own terms as Franco discards the script to a series of long sexual episodes which may turn off people who are not accustomed to this type of cinema. The quality is fine , both films are in full screen and the images flip flop from grainy to smooth. All in all, a mish mosh of possibilities which is recommended to Franco fans only and lovers of erotic cinema.

Where to start with this garbage? First, the title is beyond misleading--it's perplexing. "Erotic Rites of a Virgin"?? There are no virgins here, nor any rites. I have no idea where that comes from.

This is a collection of two low-low-LOW-budget foreign films, "Red Silk" (1999) which is dubbed, and "Snakewoman" (2005) which is subtitled.

What are these movies about? I wish that I could tell you, because I couldn't figure it out. There is lots and lots of full-frontal nudity, and a fair amount of explicit nudity (more in "Snakewoman" than in "Red Silk"). Only one of the women really is what I'd call hot, the blonde in "Red Silk." The others are average, below average, or downright ugly (the brunette in "Red Silk"). The sex, primarily lesbian, isn't hot at all.

If you're really interested, "Red Silk" is more of a comedy, but it's not funny (closer to being gross). I couldn't figure out if the women were prostitutes, investigators or maybe both. There was a murder or an assault or a kidnapping or something. Really, it made no sense whatsoever and even if it did, it was so boring (and the brunette actress so unattractive) that you wouldn't want to watch anyway. Plus, why "Red Silk"? Where was the red silk???

"Snakewoman" is kind of a horror/thriller, on a supernatural level. So it's weirdness is somewhat intentional. The Snakewoman never appears clothed throughout the movie, but that's not as exciting as it might sound, because she's not attractive.

The only thing that makes this three stars for me rather than two is that there is a lot of exposure here and some attractive women. But I can't recommend it.
