Review

Isabel and Jessaloup's race against time and the book's spirit of adventure keep the pages turning. A fantasy that will satisfy fans of Velmans' previous work as well as new readers, budding scientists in particular. -- Kirkus Reviews

From the Back Cover

SAVE THE HUMANS...
WHAT IF... the whales had knowledge of an upcoming disaster, and we didn't?
WHAT IF... the whales decided they had to warn us?
WHAT IF... there was just one human being in the world the whales could turn to who would know what to do?
A tsunami is coming to the East Coast of America... and it's up to two brave teens to find a way to sound the alarm, so that a catastrophic disaster can be averted in time. Along the way, Isabel and Jessaloup must learn to understand, and accept, the differences between their two opposite worlds - the ocean and dry land - in order to discover the deep, essential bonds that connect them.

I loved Isabel of the Whales, and was delighted to discover Jessaloup's Song. Hester Velman's new book is,if anything, even more engaging and emotionally gratifying than its predecessor. It is an enchanting fulfillment of Isabel's story. We learn why Isabel has always felt such yearning for the sea; she has a history and destiny of which she has been kept unaware, much like Harry Potter. Jessaloup, for whom she felt awkward, forbidden stirrings in the first book, reenters her life and they work together to avert an unthinkable catastrophe on land. There are moments of sparkling romantic comedy as well painful conflict between them. The ending, in which her family's fiercely guarded mysteries are revealed, is ineffably moving.
I had shared Isabel of the Whales with several girls at the schools at which I work, and all loved the book and were eager for the story to continue. Hester Velmans captures adolescent emotions with great freshness and wisdom, and she knows how to create a thrilling reading experience. Introduce a girl you you care about to these books. I promise she will love you for it.

I loved this book. If you've read Isabel of the Whales, it's a welcome follow-up. If you haven't, it's still a great read. This creative book is a gripping adventure story for young adults. Get it in your school libraries or as a present. A fine choice for the beach as well.

Jessaloup's Song, by the Hester Velmans, is a gratifying sequel to the first book, Issabel of the Whales.
This is a simply-told tale about grand themes, overcoming impossible difficulties, conflict, love, and the planet. Like the first book it appeals to children, while addressing the tastes of adults as well.

There are twists and turns, a plot that kept me reading well into the night.
Hester Velmans has done it again.
A terrific read.

I adored "Isabel of the Whales", even though it is geared towards a younger audience than I am, and I was hoping for a sequel the first time I read it. The story is magical, beautiful... and this sequel does not disappoint. It is three years later, and Isabel still having trouble readjusting to her life on land, though she loves her human family, she misses her whale one. I have to say the secrets that were revealed were not what I was expecting, but, it was awesome. I adored it. The clear love between Isabel and Jessaloup that they had trouble in their adolescent hearts expressing... it was just a grand story and the perfect happily ever after conclusion.

I finished Isabel and then the trouble began. My sister and I debated over what would happen next for what felt like forever. Finally, I had Jessaloup in my hands. I didn't put it down until I was done. It had the same magic of tranferring me to somplace else, and by the end of the book, I finally felt that the story was complete. I could sleep at night again, not wondering and worryin about what would happen next.

Jessaloup is an incredible journey full of engaging characters and amazing lessons. I hope Hester writes again... and soon!!

'Jessaloup's Song'can be appreciated and enjoyed as a bright and intelligent, early-teen love-story, and also as a fast-paced and riveting eco-thriller. But I think that at it's heart this sequel to 'Isabella of the Waves'is an affecting and bitter-sweet exploration of the nature of love. In its many forms, and with its undeniable demands. I sense that this book would be emotionally 'nutrious' as well as informative fun-reading for almost any age. Jessaloup's Song
