I got this as the free app of the day today for Super Bowl Sunday 2013 from Amazon.COM.

This is a hard app to describe so I will try my best to review it.

Here is what this app Conjure appears to do: You type in a word or words in a search box and like on a Google search webpage, it will attempt to autocomplete what you are typing in.

For example, if you are looking for the game Angry Birds, you type in AB or Angry Birds or part of either word and it will appear in the selections below. Then you just select that selection and the app starts. You can also do this to enter in a word you want to hear pronounced if you have a Text to Speech feature on your device.

This app would be very handy if you have hundreds of apps on your device and you want to find one right away without sliding your finger through all of the apps or if you can't remember the beginning of the title of the app you are looking for.

This app has a few other useful features such as looking up contact information on your device, but it also seems lacking in several areas.

Examples of where this app is lacking is if you are looking for a book or a song. This app cannot be used to find them even if they are stored directly on your device and not in a cloud environment.

Also the help section was rather brief and not very useful.

There is the ability to integrate this app with the Tasker app which the app developer claims is potentially the most powerful command in Conjure. One major problem here though: This Tasker app is only available at Google Play store and not at the Amazon store, making this part useless to people who cannot access the Google Play store.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly reasonable permissions, useful functionality February 3, 2013
By Me

First, about the permissions. This is not a data mining app -- there is no way for the app to phone home because there is no network connection permission. Here is an explanation of its use of the permissions:
Read/write calendar - searches and creates appointments
Run at startup - it wants to load in advance to have fast response when needed
Connect to bluetooth devices - allows searching and activating pairs (though I don't see it actually using this permission)
Detect wifi - see if it's on already
Change wifi - turn on/off by clicking search results
Read/write system settings - allows searching for toggles and adjusting (i.e. search "volume" and you can adjust it)
Call on its own - allows you tap a contact and initiate call
Read contacts - allows app to index contacts for searching.

As for usefulness, if you are looking for a typing-based app/contact/calendar/settings searcher and launcher, this app will do the job for you. Seems quick enough once it's loaded, and it does just what it says it'll do. It allows instant access to an app or the app settings, calendar entries can be searched or created, certain system settings can be adjusted (search 'toggle' for all of them), and contacts can be searched for and called or texted directly. Your search can also be sent to a web search, map search or spoken(?). It does not do any file indexing, which would be useful, but it doesn't claim to.

It has an option for a persistant notification for easy access, but I don't think I'll be using that -- I'll just put it on my home screen.

I'm not sure what value this provides over the default Google Search app that comes with most Android devices (not sure if the Kindle's have it), as that app does much the same thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Permissions are acceptable February 3, 2013
Verified Purchase
To those of you who are downgrading because of permissions, you're wrong about the being overly broad. This program is a launcher replacement and as such it needs access to nearly everything in order to work. For example, if the phone permissions are needed so that you can create a contact shortcut (contact permissions needed there) and dial the phone.

If you are not a programmer or have never written an Android program, don't presume to know what are talking about.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmm... February 3, 2013
Verified Purchase
This is quick and useful and reminds me of the iPhone search function. I'm still not really sold. Google Search is a bit more useful.
Now for a review of the reviewers: I don't get why people rant about the permissions. For an application launcher? No phone home functionality, even (no network access besides seeing and connecting Wi-Fi networks, and making calls "without your permission" just means not having to go through Dialer), and using the app, you see the reasons for the permissions. I dislike this app because it lacks usefulness that I thought it had, but if you take into account that it's, you know, an app launcher, perhaps it would make a little sense and you can like/dislike it on its own merits like I did. Okay? =)

5.0 out of 5 stars I like it! February 3, 2013

I am very happy with this app! Combined with my Swype keyboard, it makes for very fast searching. I have been looking for a way to quickly dial, and this is it. Type in a name, and the contact comes up with a shortcut to dial or message. Type in a place and you can web search or map search. I especially like being able to keep it in the status bar, so no matter what I'm doing, I can quickly search.

And I compared this to Google search, and it has way more functionality. They are NOT the same thing.

This app will likely be used daily be me! And I will be telling my husband and son about it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Conjure
Download and looked great on my ASUS tablet. Game play was boring and uninteresting. I suppose it is personal preference, not the game for me.
