5.0 out of 5 stars perfect for our almost 2 year old
As she approaches her 2nd birthday, our little girl is getting to the point now where simple board books are too boring, but lengthy stories are still too much for her to absorb. We stumbled across this Jesse Bear book somehow, and it's perfect for her. The illustrations are bright and pleasing. Plus, she can really relate to Jesse's typical day- getting dressed,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute but we have better
My 3 year old son enjoys this one. My 4 1/2 year old daughter does not. The age is listed as 4-7 reading level, but I can not see a 6 or 7 year old really enjoying this. More of a cute rhyming type of story for a 2-3 year old.

This review is from: Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? (Paperback)
As she approaches her 2nd birthday, our little girl is getting to the point now where simple board books are too boring, but lengthy stories are still too much for her to absorb. We stumbled across this Jesse Bear book somehow, and it's perfect for her. The illustrations are bright and pleasing. Plus, she can really relate to Jesse's typical day- getting dressed, playing, eating, Daddy coming home from work, bathing, and going to bed. Now I just need to find more books like this! One recommendation: If your child doesn't tear pages, I'd get the hardcover edition. First, I borrowed the hardcover from our library and then I ordered the board book from Amazon. The board book is much smaller than the hardcover, so now my daughter asks for me to read "BIG Jesse Bear book," and I have to explain that we only have the small one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?: excellent children's book, December 2, 1999
Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?, is an excellent book. This book focuses on younger children, but is interesting and fun for all to read. I am currently 16 years old and I have owned this book since I was very little. One can tell by the condition of the cover it was a very well liked bedtime story. The story tells of Jesse, a little bear cub, and what he does during the day. Jesse goes through the story telling what he wears for every activity he does, whether it is sand, a shirt or his pajamas. Jesse is a very mischevious, and spunky little cub who will keep you paying attention throughout the story. This book has great illustrations and will be treasured forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids know it's my favorite, August 10, 1999
By A Customer
If it's past bedtime, my 10 year can pull out Jesse Bear and lure me into reading with him a little bit longer. We've been reading this for 9 years and I still love it. The illustrations are lovely. The cadence of the book is fun! I almost sing the words and the final few pages have created a ritual of "three kisses' and "hugs" and a tranquil feeling from the last page. What a beautiful place to live. It's a great gift book for younger kids, new moms or just to have for a special 10 minute reading period with your kids. Great last book before bedtime book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jesse Bear What Will You Wear?, November 11, 2006
Excellent little story for toddlers and pre-schoolers. All three of my children love it and want to hear it again and again. The illustrations are also engaging for them as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Politically correct" or not, this is a delightful story, August 17, 2005
We checked this book out from the library, and have renewed it four times. My 2.5 year old simply cannot get enough of Jesse Bear. We even made our own "Jesse Bear" and clothes out of felt, and he likes to play with it as we read the story.

It's true that Mama Bear is the primary caretaker, while Papa Bear is the bread-winner who puts his feet up when he gets home - unlike his wife who is actively involved in the illustrations for the entire book. So what? If you as a parent are worried about gender-inequality, what a perfect time to discuss gender roles! "Do you see how excited Jesse Bear is when Papa comes home from work? You know, in some families the Mama works too...." Since when does a book have to be politically correct in order to be worth reading or owning? I feel it is more important to expose children to the variety of life options in childrens' books, and use them as a stepping stone towards a discussion, than to avoid books based on the political correctness of the day.

If you're mature enough to handle 'old fashioned' gender roles, this book is sure to bring delight to your child and yourself. I am anxious to turn in the library book and replace it with a permanent copy for ourselves. I see Jesse Bear being a part of our lives for a looooooooooong time...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little book, November 3, 2004
By
At first, I wasn't too sure about this book when we received it as a gift, but now, my little one at 3 just loves it. I have to read it over, and over, and over, and he still wants to take it to bed. It's a very cute little story about what a little bear wears all day, but also what he does during his day. My little one particularly likes the "ants in my pants" part, but it is a very entertaining book and quite cute. Definitely a must for bedtime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyrical, Sweet Book - My Kids Love It!, August 26, 2005

(REAL NAME)
First of all, I have to chuckle about the people worrying about political correctness. C'mon, folks, a little book isn't going to teach your kids about parental roles, between your influence and the fact that the world IS politically correct, they will get it soon enough! Secondly, some households have stay-at-home moms (we work, too, trust me!) and out of home dads, like ours! I had a professional career once too, and now I have a job that's just as important...and my husband is very involved with the kids, even though he works long hours to make our situation work. Sorry if Daddy coming home from work to see Mommy and son offends anyone! Good grief... I feel like I have apologize for loving this book that so closely mirrors my life - and gives my son great joy because he can relate so closely to it!

That being said, I will climb off my soapbox and praise this sweet little book. My son was captivated from 18 months on. The way it flows, its sweetness and silliness...And the last page always chokes me up. My little daughter has now discovered it, and we read it every night. She loves the part where Daddy comes home and Mommy is pushing Jessie Bear is in the tree swing - that's pretty much the scene at our house every night in our front yard!

It's a great, simple little book - I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's one of my daughter's favorite books, June 4, 2001
We love Jesse Bear. My husband and I are touched by the way our now 15 months old baby loves this book...she likes to hear the story over and over (like is normal for all kids at this age) a lot more than she like to hear other stories, she knows many words and acts out (in her very own way) the things that Jesse Bear is doing. When Jesse Bear's pants dance she dances, she touches her toes and screams TOES! when Jesse Bear is playing with a rose in his toes...She waits excited for the part about Jesse Bear wearing his CHAIR! and for the carrots and PEAS!, she loves the blanket that's blue and plays peek-a-boo and gives "bear hugs" to us...She just totally loves it. The illustrations of the book are beautifully done...Although I did notice that the papa bear comes home at night just for bath and bed time I don't consider that to be incorrect at all...the story portraits a very loving papa bear who -in this case like for many real life families- is working out all day. The mama is home taking care of Jesse Bear...I think this story could represent any happy family's normal day, whether is the mom or the dad working out of the home or both, the story has a main caregiver with the child all day and a loving parent who comes later on. The rhyme is nice, sweet and musical. My daughter can spend a long time just browsing through its pages and mumbling with joy things about Jesse Bear's adventures. This book is MUST HAVE for babies and young children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, May 30, 2007

This is the perfect toddler book. I got it from the library for a homeschool lesson, and my daughter loved it so much I'm going to buy our own copy. The images are colorful and soft, with lots to look at. The story (or poetry) is very simple and short. I like how, even though the story centers around baby Jesse and his mom, the dad is involved also. The story is very warm, with obvious affection shown for Jesse by his parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bright Pictures and a story toddlers can relate to, September 17, 2001

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I enjoy reading this book to my children and they enjoy having it read to them. The story line is one that my son can relate to because it's all about Jesse Bear's day and what he wears for each activity. The rhymes are cute and have a rythm that make this book easy to read. The pictures are bright and cheery.

If you have a toddler around, this book is a good one to buy.
