She's not a dumb blonde...she just acts that way on TV...,
By Lawrance M. Bernabo (The Zenith City, Duluth, Minnesota) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Jessica Simpson - Rolling Stone Cover Music Poster Print, 22x34 (Kitchen)
I understand that Jessica Simpson is currently America's Sweetheart, but I think the title really comes to her by default. Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff are caught up in a perpetual media cat fight, Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie are a couple of sick jokes, Amy Lee has a much better voice but is too Goth, and while nobody this side of Madonna works the publicity machine as well as Britney Spears the queen of the pop tarts is on her second marriage where as Simpson is decidedly on her first. At least Simpson has the distinction of being someone who tried out for The Mickey Mouse Club and failed to make it. Then again, how many singers have their first album paid for by their grandmother? Her first album with a major label, "Sweet Kisses," made it to #25 on the Billboard album chart, "Irresistible" in 2001 made it to #6, and last year's "In the Skin" topped out at #2. But the key to Simpson's success seems to be her marriage to Lachey. After appearing on several episodes of "That 70's Show," she and Lachey got to do a reality show on MTV, "Newlyweds," which captured the magical moments of the couple's first year of marriage. A lot of comparisons were drawn to Sonny and Cher, but with Simpson milking the dumb blonde routine for everything it was worth, their act was a lot more like Burns and Allen (but without the wit). By this point the marketing of Jessica Simpson was in full stride and the next thing we knew "In This Skin" was being rereleased with new tracks, including a cover of Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" and footage from "Newlyweds." The rather oxymoronic notion of Jessica Simpson as the "Housewife of the Year" is captured in this cover of "Rolling Stone" magazine taken by Max Vadukul (an ironic frame of reference is obviously the way to read this image. All of the rest of the captions on the front cover have been removed, so you do have the names of John Mayer and the Rev. Al Sharpton next to a picture of a young bride in a tank top and panties. In doing this poster they actually rearranged things a bit to make it look better. Simpson's body is moved down a bit so more of the magazine logo can be seen and the original photograph is not cropped as closely as it is on the cover. The text is also moved down a bit as well. This is the first "Rolling Stone" cover that I have seen redone as a 23 x 35 inch wall poster, and hopefully there will be some others out there based on some of the magazine's other (more) classic covers. This particular image should appeal to Simpson's fans, who are obviously buying into her image big time (she and Lachey did a Christmas special this week and it was important that the commercials emphasize both her singing and her getting her tongue stuck to frozen flag pole). Meanwhile, "Re-Joyce: The Christmas Album" has with its curiously but not comically misspelled title been released with a cover shot that seems to suggest the spreading of a different type of season cheer than first springs to mind. |
