I'm partial to this version of JCS because it was the first I heard. Having said that, I really believe that it is really superb. Camilo Sesto is excellent in here as Jesus. I believe his Gethsemani is played half a key down from the original (1969) version, but it's still impressive. Angela Carrasco is wonderful and Teddy Bautista was also very good as Judas. More on him later.
The person who really impressed me here was Antonio de Diego. Not only did he show off an incredible tenor voice in his role of Peter, but also played the guitar parts in the record. And this record rocks.
Teddy Bautista was the arranger of this production. He brought in a more rock oriented approach to this, as opposed to the Broadway affectations of the original. The result is a better, more rocking and swinging version. The orchestration and playing was first rate. Bautista used synthesizers to great effect, especially on "Sueño de Pilatos", but his use of two French horns on "Simon Zelotes" was very inspired.
Another thing that may be noticed by people familiar with this version and the original London version is the lyrics. Tim Rice's libretto is full of irony and wit, while here there's a tendency to follow biblical text more faithfully. It's less funny, but there's something to the familiarity of the words for someone like me who on occasion reads the Bible.
All in all this is really good stuff. If you like it, you should try Sesto's "Memorias" a Bautista-produced album featuring a title track that will sound oddly familiar.

Camilo Sesto gives an incredible performance. You can feel his pain and agony in Getsemaní. You can also feel the sweetness in his voice in Hosanna. This is a great buy. A great mixture of everything that makes music beautiful.

This spanish version of Jesus Christ Superstar, contains the recording of the best interpretation of the lyrics and orchestrations for the people that want to hear this masterpiece in his native language(even if you speak enghlish you'll enjoy this recording) . The voices are incredible.!!! Camilo Sesto is a really, really good Jesus, testing his voice limits in Gethsemane, and doing a perfect job.!!! Angela Carrasco as Mary Magdalene has such a beautiful voice, and its sounds angelic in "Todo esta bien (Everything's allright)" and "No se como amarlo (I don't know how to love him)". Also the cast that play the other roles (Caiphas, Annas, Peter, Simon) do a great job, being a special plus the performance of Herod, I mean it's awesome.!! So if you have the chance to buy this cd, buy it, you'll not be dissapointed.

I totally agree with all previous reviews. This is by far the best JCSS album ever. Even better than all previous English versions. I'm not kidding. If you speak Spanish you are going to love it. You don't even have to be religious to listen to this Album because it's pure rock. If you don't speak Spanish just learn it so you can listen to its beautiful lyrics. The actor's voices are great, they are much much better than the English versions (trust me I've seen them all), and since Spanish is a romantic language, the words fit perfectly with the music.
Camilo Sesto does the role of Jesus, and he does a superb job! His voice is clear, powerful and you can actually feel what he sings. Teddy Bautista plays the role of Judas and he does a quiet good job. His voice fits perfectly the character of Judas. Angela Carrasco plays the role of Marie Magdalene and her voice is beautiful, so clear and powerful. The orchestra is one of the best JCSS orchestrations ever! I really mean it! It sound beautiful and truly "rock opera". Unlike the English versions where the actors "talk" while the music plays in the background, in this version the actors actually "sing rock" while the very oriented rock & roll orchestra plays in the background. It also contains some very special arrangements not contained in the English versions, like keyboard sound and some little "extra tunes". My favorite song is "Jesus morira" a.k.a "This Jesus must die". All tracks are awesome, but I love this one in particular because of the drums and guitar, they really do an excellent job here, it sounds like a rock band instead of a play.
If you love JCSS, you're going to love this version, even if you don't speak Spanish, you'll learn the quality and effort that went into production. I highly recommend it. Buy it now! This version totally rocks!!!
