Thomas Nelson's immensely successful devotional Jesus Calling is now available within the full Bible text of the NKJV in the Jesus Calling Devotional Bible. Jesus Calling comes from the personal journals of Sarah Young, a missionary who decided to record her impressions of God's voice, journaling the voice of the Lord rather than prayers. The result was a unique and perhaps prophetic perspective on devotion. Jesus Calling presents an intimate look inside a relationship with Jesus and a discovery of his voice and character as filtered through the relationship of one person. While I am not able to read and evaluate all of the content within this volume, the nature of the project resonates with me. One must be careful to weigh the words of the devotion more carefully, as they are written in the first person as from the Lord and as such should be tested and tried (1 Thessalonians 5:19-22). Young's project is dangerously intimate, but promises to pull the reader into discerning the voice of the Lord and finding the power of the loving, kind, good, faithful, joyous, peaceful, patient, gentle, self-controlled voice of Jesus.

At 8 and 5/8" by 5 and 1/2" with a 2" spine the Jesus Calling Devotional Bible fits my preference for a well-weighted Bible with a thick spine. The padded hardcover is nicer than a plain hardcover and the graphics are attractive. The spine is obviously glued and the size of the book block makes me fairly sure that the spine would not hold up to constant use; however, this is a devotional Bible and most users probably won't make this a lifetime Bible. It should hold a couple years under average use. There are also leathersoft editions available which may feature a sewn binding.

The Jesus Calling Devotional Bible (NKJV), published by Thomas Nelson, was given to me by Booksneeze in exchange for an honest and objective review. This NKJV Bible includes 260 prayers with answers written by Sarah Young (author of Jesus Calling and Jesus Lives) from a first person perspective of Jesus.

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical of anyone writing a first person narrative from Jesus' perspective. Didn't Jesus already say everything that was necessary in the Scriptures? I can be a dangerous thing to write using the voice of Jesus because a human cannot know exactly how Jesus would answer another person's prayers. HOWEVER, I was pleasantly surprised to see that all of Sarah Young's writings included in this devotional are based on three or more parts of Scripture. Essentially she is just rephrasing what Jesus has already said in a way that relates specifically to our particular time and culture. The truths she bases her `answers' on are biblical.

This book is well made; the cover is very smooth and has a soft feel to it, although it is a hard cover book. The typeface is easy to read and there are highlighted verses that are expanded in lightly colored boxes throughout. There is a helpful topical index as well as a devotional index. I think I will really enjoy using this Bible for years to come.

Besides my Bible this is the best read for a daily devotional. Great gift. Pages are filled with the spirit. If you have lost someone close, going through a struggle or just want to renew your daily walk this is the book for you.

This is a review for the Kindle ebook version of Jesus Calling Devotional Bible NKJV by Sarah Young. This bible is a normal NKJV bible with 260 devotionals plucked from Sarah Young's other books and inserted into a NKJV bible. These 260 devotionals are EXACTLY word-for-word the same devotionals from Young's "Jesus Calling", "Jesus Lives", and "Dear Jesus" books. For those wanting to find the devotionals, thankfully, there is an index to each devotional by subject matter: Sorrow, Thankfulness, Brokenness, Control, etc.

So, if you already have a NKJV bible and you own Sarah Young's devotional books (with 365 devotionals per book), you will be better off without this bible. It only has 260 selected devotionals, not 365 devotionals times 3 books = 1095 devotional days. I give this bible 3 stars because there is nothing new in this bible. In fact, I feel you are better off just buying Young's 3 books and hanging on to your current bible. Essentially, this only appeals to me as a "gift bible" to give away to someone who is not familiar with Sarah Young, or someone who is a HUGE fan of Young's.

Now, if you are not familiar with Sarah Young, she writes devotionals "from Jesus' point of view/perspective." She says that she began "listening" to what Jesus spoke to her as she read the Bible. So all her devotionals are from Christ's point-of-view. It is as if Jesus is speaking directly to you. Many find these "words directly from Jesus" to be very inspiring and helpful. Others may find this to be blasphemous because Young is writing words as if her words are being spoken by Jesus. So I will leave it up to the reader to decide where to draw their line.

My disclaimer - I received this book from the publisher but I always give brutally honest reviews. I want you to be able to choose the best book based on stars because I know you have limited time and energy to read.
