5.0 out of 5 stars Talmage Explores the Life of Christ Brilliantly
Much more than a simple outline of the Savior's life, 'Jesus the Christ' is a detailed, penetrating account of our Lord's life and ministry. Talmage approaches the subject with the zeal of both a scholar and a true disciple. This book is must reading for anyone interested in not only the God we believe in, but also in the historical Christ and the events in the New...

1.0 out of 5 stars Limited Audience
Unlike the others who have reviewed this book, I cannot agree that you will find this book useful if you are not a member of the LDS church. The primary reason is the LDS "understanding" of Christ. Any Protestant or Catholic will have an extremely difficult time dealing with the discussion of Christ's supposed pre-mortal existence and His journeys through the...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Messiah an LDS perspective, August 23, 2001

This review is from: Jesus the Christ: A Study of the Messiah and His Mission (Classics in Mormon Literature Series) (Hardcover)
This is the definitive work on the Savior by a terrific Mormon scholar. Talmage explores all aspects of the Savior's life including the premortal existence, Christ's visit to the American continent and the spirit world. It is not a quick overview of Jesus's life but is amazingly in depth. Make sure to read the notes as they contain many interesting insights into Jesus's world from the temple tax to formation of the Sanhedrein.

Not only is it a great scholarly account but its spiritual content is unparrelled. It will bring you closer to Christ than any other (non scriptoral) book can. My favorite book. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Apostle Talmage very eloquently and spiritually discusses the life of Christ and his teachings. The book is the unique perspective of what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe about the Savior. The book is a must read for anyone wanting to bring themselves closer to Jesus Christ.

Talmage takes a very in depth look into the divine mission of Jesus Christ. Talmage explains Christ's role in Heavenly Father's eternal plan--from the preexistence to His earthly ministry to His glorious resurrection. You will not find a more enlightning book on Christ

Dr. Talmage was by training a geologist. He frames his study on the life and times of one Jesus of Nazareth in the erudite language of the turn of the last century. (I believe he first published his work in 1915.) I first read this work when I was 14 or so (with a dictionary by my side), and have returned to it repeatedly. Talmage's description of the Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and his stirring recounting of Jesus' moment of aloneness on the cross left indelible impressions upon me.

If you're LDS, it's a must-read. (It's one of the few older Mormon texts that hasn't been modified wholesale by later "editors.") If you're not, but interested in what the Mormons think of Christ, check it out. This is not a one-day read, though. Any really good meal takes a while to consume.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding His Life and Feeling a Deep Love for Him, April 7, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Jesus the Christ: A Study of the Messiah and His Mission (Classics in Mormon Literature Series) (Hardcover)
This book is the quintessential work on the life of Jesus Christ. After reading it I walked away with understanding. I consumed each chapter and footnote. I digested each endnote and reference and now understand the life of Christ-His motivations, His love for the people and His mission to mankind. The author unravels the complexity of the four gospels into a single, flowing life of the Master. I came away with a great love and gratitude for Jesus and understand, at least in part, the depth of His love for me. If you want to really understand the life of Christ, this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jesus the Christ, July 21, 2008
This review is from: Jesus the Christ: A Study of the Messiah and His Mission (Classics in Mormon Literature Series) (Hardcover)
Jesus the Christ is the most powerful book outside of scripture that I have read. James Talmage makes the content understandable and does a great job describing previously hard to understand concepts from the life of Jesus Christ. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the ministry of Jesus Christ.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Truely Inspired Work of our Savior, February 20, 2007
By
This review is from: Jesus the Christ: A Study of the Messiah and His Mission (Classics in Mormon Literature Series) (Hardcover)
This is an absoultely wonderful book that I would highly recomend to everyone on the planet to read who wants to get closer to our Lord and Savior.

This book looks at the life of the important person who ever walked this earth's life from the beginning of time, to his birth, life, death, resurrection and his future. Everything he explains is through the scriptures(both Bible, the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants). He explains it in a way where it comes to life and he makes everything very understandable. I am not one who could ever get through the Bible because of its difficulty but James E. Talmage brings the scriptures to life in a very logical and enjoyable way.

I could tell that the author was deeply inspired to write this book. This book has helped me understand our Savior in a way I could never understand with any other book.

I am deeply thankful for James E. Talmage for writing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An objective historical review of Christ and his mission, November 3, 1998
This review is from: Jesus the Christ: A Study of the Messiah and His Mission (Classics in Mormon Literature Series) (Hardcover)
Talmage has a unique way of delving into the personality of the son of God...Jesus Christ. Throughout the pages he not only describes the personality but delves into the misssion of Christ and why he was what he was. The reader will come away with a better understanding of the trinity being three distinct personages: an understanding of the purpose of life; and most important becoming a witness of Jesus himself. Its worth the time and investment to get a personal copy for the family library.
