5.0 out of 5 stars JCS - still fascinating after all these years
My parents took me to see this show in NY in '1972 and I have been hooked ever since. 2 years ago I bought the 2 CD set and it brought back many fond memories. The words and music to this show are still incredibly powerful and clever -even now. Although I enjoy listening to this version, I still remember the voices and inflections of the cast members that I was lucky...

5.0 out of 5 stars JCS - still fascinating after all these years, July 13, 1999

My parents took me to see this show in NY in '1972 and I have been hooked ever since. 2 years ago I bought the 2 CD set and it brought back many fond memories. The words and music to this show are still incredibly powerful and clever -even now. Although I enjoy listening to this version, I still remember the voices and inflections of the cast members that I was lucky enough to enjoy back in '72 (I must have played that album a million times). Ted Neeley as Christ, Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene and - yes Ben Vereen(!) as Judas. The three of them were absolutely amazing. Would love to be able to find this album if anyone out there has it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Version, August 28, 2009
This review is from: Jesus Christ Superstar (1974 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
If you liked the movie and want to listen to just the songs over and over and over, this two CD set will not disappoint you in the least. The quality of the CD is the same or slightly better than that of the DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Rock Operas are Meant to be...Moving!, January 13, 2004
By

First seeing the movie when I was ten, I didn't realize what I know and appreciate now: that the voices and music for JCS depict a time when people in our society were trying to look at life in different ways. We moved from hippees to Disco, we moved from "Non-White" to Multicultural. Thirty years ago, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice helped to shape how we must live: to look at things in a different light, explore new avenues, embrace the joy and passion of a story.
This isn't the typical Passion story, it's seen through the eyes of Judas. Yet, isn't that what Weber and Rice wanted us to do, walk in someone else's shoes and see another side- to someoneelse's truth. He didn't say that, but the movie, music and lyrics move us to explore for ourselves.

This is an amazing display of talent. A moving spectacle of a
classic story. Jesus Christ Superstar is what a good musical
should be. The spectrum of the singers' talent is on full display. I believe this is the most moving soundtrack one can
find anywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 70's rock score coupled w/ intriguing Christian views., May 15, 1999

This review is from: Jesus Christ Superstar (1974 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
After first hearing this unbeleviable album I could only hink of one thing. Was Jesus this good of a singer? From the beginning overture to the crucifixtion, the music takes you through a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Carl Anderson really shines as Judas, and Ted Nelley as Christ displays a talent that has yet to be outdone in my opinion. The music itself is reminisant of heavy guitar orintated rock with a flare of 20's ragtime, i.e. King Herod's little number, were actor Josh Mostel really strutts his stuff in a brazen fancy boy way. The scene that shows you are in the prescence of great vocal talent would be the "Everythings all Right," and "Too much Heaven on their Minds" songs. The story it's self may offend some hardcore fundamentalists, but I thought it has some very accurate and legitemate points. It veiws the last days of Christ from a different angle. But, don't let the story turn you off from the music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great and dramatic musical from a great composer!, June 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Jesus Christ Superstar (1974 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
"JCS" is a very enjoyable and spectacular musical. It's full of fun rock and pop numbers and has very touching dramatic highlights. Lloyd Webber has the gift to carry such a story into a rock opera and identify the viewer (and listener) with the characters' inner struggles. Each song is very well sustented and says very much on its own. I know the movie brought a rash of controversy, but I can't understand why. Some people definitely either didn't understand or malinterpreted the message, or simply hated it because of treating divine subjects using modern music which they considered a sacrilege. Someone said there was the intention of depicting a love affair between Jesus and Mgdalene (actually Magadalene's song talks about how sad she is because she can't attract him to her) Why? Isn't it true that that one who sings is praying twice? If so, does the type of music and the rhythm matter? I really think this is a big achievement and maybe more musicals like this one could bring everybody -young people above all- closer to our religion and its history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock-on, Jesus Christ!, May 1, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Jesus Christ Superstar (1974 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
There are not enough words to describe this incredible musical-- or its incredible composer: Andrew Lloyd Weber. To come up with such an controversial idea as Jesus before the crucifiction, and to tell it through the eyes three very important witnesses: Judas Iscariot, the traitor, Mary Magdalene, the follower, and Jesus Christ, the Superstar!Lloyd Weber didn't stop there! Jesus Christ Superstar's music is the music of the twentieth century: Rock and Pop. Once you listen to the music of the movie, be ready to become addicted to this wonderful musical and its wonderful composer. i know I was! END

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite movie/soundtrack, January 23, 2004
This review is from: Jesus Christ Superstar (1974 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
Maybe I love this music so much because I grew up watching this movie all the time, but these songs move me like no other music I know. This is a nice CD, good recording, average case/contents.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPECTACULAR!!, December 4, 2008
This review is from: Jesus Christ Superstar (1974 Film Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
I absolutely love this movie!! I just saw the play again at the Cadillac Theater in Chicago with Ted Neeley. Awesome! The music is just beautiful.
I have been enjoying it every morning while I am getting dress for work since it is being shown on demand! I never tire of it...the more you listen to the words the more they make sense. Now I can listen to the sound track at work.
