About the Author

Richard Holzapfel, Thomas Wayment, and Eric Huntsman are members of the Religious Education faculty at Brigham Young University. Richard Holzapfel is editor-in-chief of the Religious Educator and also serves as the photographic editor for BYU Studies. Thomas Wayment received a Ph.D. in New Testament studies at the Claremont Graduate University and is a professor in the department of Ancient Scripture at BYU. Eric Huntsman is an assistant professor in the department of Ancient Scripture and has taught classes in Biblical Greek as well as Greek and Roman history.

This book is excellent. It has great photos, easy-to-read maps, overlapping time lines and side bar articles. It explains in detail the relationships of the time and the influence of both the Roman and Jewish governments. It is written much like a documentary and adds incredible depth to your New Testament study. Great for any denomination.

Although there are some interesting tidbits in this book, I don't really feel like I have learned a whole lot from this book. I haven't had an aha moment that helps me feel a more intimate connection to Jesus Christ. The pictures in it are interesting but not compelling and it does get tedious at times. One thing that is great about the book is the historical perspective it gives on how the Bible was actually put together; when books were written. I can really see that there was no rhyme or reason to the way it is ordered, so people really should not put any stock in that when reading the Bible.

This is an excellent book on the New Testament written by LDS authors. It has many illustrations and is beautifully written. My wife and I are reading it to each other and are learning a lot. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to learn a great deal about the NT.
