5.0 out of 5 stars If you need convincing of life in Reggae beyond Marley..., April 19, 2001

This music has the power to heal and change your life for the better! So righteous and beautiful I just can't get enough. I own well over 200 Reggae CDs and this one is now at the top of my list -- it has been growing on me exponentially since I got it. This is definitely music which requires repeated listenings for maximum enjoyment. Some of the best vocal harmonies in the history of Reggae, with fat grooves to match. Very hymn-like and churchical, with many outstanding dubs by King Tubby. Almost all the tracks were recorded at Scratch's Black Ark and voiced at Tubby's, with toasts from Big Youth, Trinity and Tappa Zukie. Also featuring a young Michael Rose on one track. The players are all top studio men, including Family Man, Sly Dunbar, Horsemouth Wallace, Chinna and many more. The liner notes are great with interviews and photos. All around one of the best examples of pure, righteous, Jamaican Reggae in existence. It will put joy in your heart and have you singing and bouncing all day long.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite records, period., April 6, 2006

I noticed there has been no 5-star praise for this album since 2005, so I want to add mine for 2006: I listen to this Double CD since 1998 - it is increadibly beautiful and never gets boring. I disagree with the reviewer who said this record is one that has to grow on you - I loved it the first time I heard it and I still do. I have bought this CD set since '98, gave it away to friends for birthdays and such, bought it again, and so forth. This album is easily among my top ten, not only for reggae. If you appreciate albums that have not a single lame song in them and that have timeless quality and are incredibly stunning works of art such as Talking Timbuktu by Ry Cooder and Ali Farka Toure, Rocking Time by Burning Spear, Welcome to Sky Valley by Kyuss or Clandestino by Manu Chao, you will love Jesus Dread.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Roots experience, May 4, 2005
This review is from: Jesus Dread (Audio CD)
Dark, haunting, uplifting, beautiful, conflicting....all these words apply to Yabby You's music. This box set is possibly the greatest release by the great Blood and Fire label. I have been listening to this release for years, and still find myself putting it on again and again. You get many different versions of the same song, but it is feels far from repetitive, instead you feel like you are getting closer and closer to the truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely necessary double CD, December 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Jesus Dread (Audio CD)
Because of the world's love affair with Bob Marley (one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, don't get me wrong) many reggae artists of the 70's get overlooked, and this is too bad, because Bob is but the tip of the iceberg! One of those overlooked despite being possessed of pure GENIUS is Yabby U. Yabby's message, riddims, and harmonies are divinely beautiful, and there is not a slow minute on this pack of originals, dubs, overdubs, toasts, and versions. Yabby U says he started singing because of divine inspiration; given what he's created, I don't know who can argue that he wasn't. --On a side note, in addition to the amazing tracks that will be in store for you on this, the liner notes are among the best I've ever read...just a thought. Prepare yourself for the power of Yabby U as he chants it down.

The Blood and Fire label is known as the reggae reissue label between the sound quality and selection you can't go wrong with anything on this label. This Yabby U LP is tied as my favorite Blood and Fire LP with Children of Jah. You want this LP.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roots master finally gets his due, February 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Jesus Dread (Audio CD)
Yabby You is the most criminally overlooked artist in reggae. In many ways his work is similar to Lee Perry's in that he is a band leader singer and producer of vast vission and daring. This disc compiles vintage singles and dub mixes as well as classic toats by the like of Big Youth and Trinity. The rare two disc set that only suffers for not being longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome roots and dub package, May 2, 2007

I just got this and boy is it a heavy document of reggae music. Despite his relative invisibility, Yabby You is one of the biggest creative forces in Jamaican music. Its undeniable once you hear his music.

I also wanted to add that this issue is packaged like a box set and includes a deluxe stapled booklet that is quite weighty and informative. So if the CD seems a little expensive, that is a factor. But it is more that worth it.

They did it again. English label Blood and Fire has been releasing hard-to-find and out-of-print reggae anthems for a while, but non of them releases surpases this magnificent double cd. Vivian Jackson, best known for the opening chorus of his timeless masterpiece (Conquering Lion), yabby you, recorded a lot of excellent music during the seventies, most of them unavaible today. But the peolpe from Blood and Fire fill the gap left by the jamaican records showcasing Jesus Dread, a mesmerizing anthology of Yabby's first hits, including dub versions, instrumental versions and a few discomix, conforming a reggae masterpiece. The talented Yabby You, helped by a few brethrens playing music (including aston barret, hoursemouth wallace, augustus pablo and bunny wailer) and dubbed by the mastermixer king of them all, mr. tubby himself, created a body of work both biblically fruitful and musically perfect. Pure roots reggae music. If you don't have this one, hurry up, it is better than buju banton and the bunch of new dancehall deejays and challenges burning spear and bunny wailer best works!!

The Jesus Dread compilation of Yabby U's work is one of the most important top 10 at least reggae albums anyone should own. Crafted like a fine architect, this album reflects all that reggae music is about. TRUTH. Beyond the hype of what's good reggae and Bob Marley (no pun intended) if you don't have Yabby You, you don't have reggae.

Wow! Before this set from Blood and Fire, I really didn't know about Yabby U. Now I do! Although this costs more because it is a double CD set, it is WELL worth the extra investment. These tracks are some of the best work done by King Tubby. Its nice how there are several different versions of many of these tracks included on the album. BUY THIS if you know and love King Tubby and the Aggrovators!
