4.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Album, January 30, 2012
This review is from: Jesus East (Audio CD)
Firstly, if you haven't heard Black Cab's first album, 'Altamont Diary', I recommend that be the starting point in approaching the music of this band. Maybe. But only because that album is so startlingly unique and brilliant.
Nevertheless, this is an album of quality music with plenty of highlights that show this band is not afraid to move away from a tried and successful formula to create new things and explore new space.
The thread of the Altamont concept is kept alive in the track 'Valiant' which has Sam Cutler, one of the organizers of Altamont and Road manager of several huge bands of the era, making a little speech over some atmospheric backing from Black Cab.
The opening track, and indeed the album, has a 'kraut rock' feel to it, but also a sprinkling of the Eastern essence of some of their previous work, including subtle Sitar weaved throughout.
The slide guitar work, all of the guitar work, is very impressive, and the musicianship is high calbre stuff. The drums are big and soaked in reverb, in keeping with the overall production of the album.
I think this is an album that will grow on you with repeated listening, be warm and inviting to those familiar with 'Altamont Diary' and I'm sure the journey is not over.
