A WIDE-RANGING SERIES OF "DIALOGUES" ABOUT "NEW AGE" IDEAS, June 15, 2011
The authors write in the Introduction to this 2003 book, "Both of us have spent more than a decade witnessing to New Age seekers of the spiritual at psychic fairs and spiritual exhibitions. Being in such unusual venues has not only placed us on the evangelistic coalface but has also touched us in significant ways. After our initial encounters, we quickly realized how unfruitful it is to approach seekers with the objective of debunking, deconstructing, or demonizing their worldview... Amazingly, when we stopped being defensive and began to approach seekers using incarnational principles of mission, we discovered how open many of them are to following Jesus... What distinguishes our book is that it presents a practical, field-tested model of how to share your faith, and demonstrates how you can apologetically direct conversatons towards Jesus' call to discipleship."
Here are some additional quotations from the book:
"Matt was keen for us to consider the work of the late Michel Gauquelin (about the "Mars effect")... However, Matt was unaware of the subsequent controversy about the Mars effect... Gaquelin's original research was called into doubt and a bitter dispute ensued between him and his colleagues. Sadly, Gaquelin's loss of reputation led him to destroy his own files, and, after a nervous breakdown, he committed suicide..." (Pg. 100-101)
"While affirming the road to global harmony, there is no neded to lose a belief in a personal Creator God who is distinct from the cosmos." (Pg. 154)
'(T)he near-death traveler is still only on the fringe of the city ... and is yet to fully explore the center... Is there anyone who can guide us through the labyrinth? Is there anyone who has been to the center of town and back? The master, Jesus, is the only one who can guide us through the labyrinth." (Pg. 173)
"As to Jesus being married to Mary Magdalene, there is simply no evidence for this. Their influences from the medieval Grail stories yield an utterly bizarre portrait of Jesus that has no historical support whatsoever." (Pg. 228)
"In this book, we have traversed a wide range of ideas and practices embraced by today's postmodern spiritual seekers. We have recreated conversations we have actually had with seekers to demonstrate their mindsets, and what issues and questions crop up." (Pg. 265)
