Book Description

0304704873 978-0304704873 October 1999
This work offers the student of biblical studies an introduction to the interpretative study of Jesus. It introduces students to the writings on Jesus and the main strands of critical interpretation. It studies the portrayal of Jesus in the four gospels with the tools of historical analysis, but with the understanding that it is the nature of the gospels which prevents history being the only concern.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'The first edition of this book has already proved its worth to students beginning Gospel study. In this revised and expanded version its authors -- experienced teachers of Theology and New Testament - offer a succinct, readable, and stimulating introduction. The writers maintain a good balance between more technical aspects of the subject (e.g., Gospel composition and relationships, "historical Jesus" issues) and matters of more general interest.'
(Ruth B. Edwards, Honorary Senior Lecturer in Divinity (New Testament), University of Aberdeen )

'Moyise and Marsh have written a very useful student introduction to key issues in the critical study of Jesus and the Gospels. It does not leap straight in to the quest of the historical Jesus but helpfully surveys the relevant materials, and provides valuable summaries of the positions of major scholars. This is a concise, readable and appealing invitation to study Jesus and the Gospels.'
(Mark Goodacre, Associate Professor in New Testament, Duke University, USA )

'It is for students and teachers...and should serve them well. The arrangement of topics is logical [and]...It is easy for students to use.'
(Rev David Blatherwick Methodist Recorder )

Reviewed in International Review of Biblical Studies, 2007.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent orientation on Jesus in the Gospels and Christ for today., October 25, 2006
As a student of the Bible, I have benefited from the presentation Marsh and Moyise offer of the Jesus made known in each of the four New Testament gospels, as well as in lesser known gospels not accepted as part of the Bible. Their simultaneous engagement with contemporary scholarship on Jesus as a prophet, as a "word-spinner," as a political liberator engaged with the poor and with women as well, as a spiritual and ethical guide, and as the Christ of Faith provides a deeper sense of both who Jesus was and how we may understand him today.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dont buy it if you are not a serious scholar or theologian, June 17, 2007
As there's no table of content here on Amazon, I would like to take the priviledge to type it for you as below:-

1. Introduction
2. Mark's Gospel
3. Matthew's Gospel
4. Luke's Gospel
5. John's Gospel
6. Apocryphal Gospels
7. The quest for the historical Jesus
8. Jesus: prophet of the coming kingdom
9. Jesus: teacher and sage
10. Political and ethical interpretations of Jesus
11. Jesus in art, media and culture
12. How Christology works: the Gospels in practice

Actually, as an average Christian, I wonder whether I am qualified to judge this book at all. Let me show you the questions in chapter 8 (there are 3 questions in the end of each chapter),

Q1. What is meant by saying that Jesus was an eschatological figure?
Q2. What was it that Jesus expected to happen soon?
Q3. Is it possible to interpret Mark 12:24-7 as describing the destruction of Jerusalem?

Nevertheless, as a book lover, I deem the writing dull and dry. A safe advice would be: for serious scholars only.
