ASTOUNDING!,
By B.Jones (Central California) - See all my reviews

I'm not even sure if astounding can describe this great album.I found this CD used and bought it after reading the reviews that were already here, and you guys were right on the mark. This has to be one of the most over-looked albums,(and bands)of all-time.The entire album has such a refreshing sound to it,it's nice to hear a band that actually cares about their music, not just the music buisness."Your socks have no name"is my favorite Tripping Daisy song of all time, and is just one of the great songs on this CD.I just don't know how else to put it,if you appreciate good music, then you have to pick up this album. It is far better than "I am an elastic firecracker",which is also a great album.Much recommended!P.S.,if you like smaller bands like Tripping Daisy, check out my other favorites,Spacehog, and Self. Thanks!

hyperbole can't begin to do it justice... this isn't just a good album, it is the music of a new world and a new philosophy as old as our species - the first philosophy. Contentment, excitement, play, joy, self-confidence, love, and deep, abiding connection spread by honesty... my words don't begin to touch how much I've changed and seen my helpmates change because of this band and this album. Golly! I sound so earnest! Life is HILARIOUS! I am healed, but there was never anything wrong. I am whole, and so are you! The world will change when we all are reborn like cartoon firebirds as the shiny, absurd, strong, hapless magical beautiful geniuses we are. Get this album and listen to it over and over and over and read the lyrics over and over and over and absord the AMAZING booklet art and stop being so cynical and love your friends until your heart aches. Tim DeLaughter is the voice of your inner child! AND SO ARE YOU! also buy the beginnings of the polyphonic spree (... because) it's where the boys went after TD and it's stunning. "'cause all you ever wanted was the truth: it's always the same when you walk and you breathe - you walk into me!"

one of the best of all time.,

This cd is amazing. Tripping Daisy created the best record of their lives with JHLTAB. In fact it is so good that mainstream radio couldn't and wouldn't have dared to play it. All the tracks are great like "mechanical breakdown" and "tiny men" and "sonic bloom" but this album needs to be listened to as a whole piece of work. The best advice would be to buy this cd then listen it a hundred times in row then stop listening to it for about a month then just pop it back in your player again. You will be amazed.... and taken to a different world...that only tripping daisy can create. The hype of Radiohead's "Kid A" was outdone two years before itself when Tripping Daisy released Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb. This recording breaks the mold of their "I got a girl" radio friendly hit and raises the bar of music itself. Island records didn't quite know how to handle this recording when they got it back in 1998 and consequently they promoted it badly. That is why it got little radio play and it remains an underground hit for real music fans. Tripping Daisy was headed in the right direction with JHLTAB and sadly the journey ended long before it was over. The music lives on...buy this record if you really appreciate music and be surprised with every listen...also check out their self-titled and final release, it is also amazing. Thanks Tripping Daisy...

You've seen theses reviews on Amazon, and you know that it's usually the fans of the band telling everyone to buy the album. In this case, it's not such a bad idea. If you remember Tripping Daisy's semi-smash single "I got a Girl." Well, it's time to forget. This album shows what the band were trying to attain on their other albums. The actual music is the best power pop you ever heard. Melodies slide in and out of the mix, leaving you tired but hungry for more. The lyrics are similar to before, but match the tone of the music better. The starts and stops will leve you jolted. There are no weak spots on the whole thing. The pure power of "Field Day Jitters," the sonic journey of "Waited a Light year," the 60s-ish beach pop of "Mechanical Breakdown," the incredible "Your Socks have no Name." These songs shine. This album was recorded with almost no label interference, so the band was let go to run free in upstate New York. What they did was produce their best album to date, and maybe the best pop album of the 90s. It was also recorded live in a lot of spots, so when the group hits a jam, you will know it and feel it.

Tripping Daisy creates a masterpiece,

This cd is by far the greatest work that Tripping Daisy has done. The thing about it is that you can listen to it over and over and still feel like you have never heard it before. It blends so many emotions but always leaves you with a blissful smile. Tripping Daisy takes you to another world from the opening cut "Field Day Jitters" to my favorite "Tiny men". This is probably the best pop album of the 1990s if not the most creative. The reason it was overlooked by the mainstream is because it is simply too good.

...you would understand the aural ecstacy that is Jesus Hits like an Atom Bomb. A total buzz of a record. This album proves that genius is always opposed by a confederacy of dunces. Island Records must be a bunch of mongoloids for dropping this band after such a brilliant album. This is the band's best effort to date and one of the top ten albums of the year.

Loved it,

I originally picked up this cd because of the fact that Ben Curtis (guitarist for The Secret Machines and one of my favorites) plays drums...and I ended up buying all the TD cds I could get my hands on.
They are fantastic. Hands down.

Overlooked pop gem,

On a long (and I mean long) roadtrip from Chicago to upstate New York I re-discovered this album and all the reasons why I loved it three years ago. The album is a potent concoction of poppy delights, from the opening salvo of "Field Day Jitters" through to the finale cover of Brainiac's "Indian Poker." The first half is a sugar rush with the standout track "Waited a Light Year," which was not only the band's finest moment (in my opinion) but one of the finest moments in 90s music after grunge crumbled to the ground. Also marvel at "Bandaids for Hire," "Your Socks Have no Name," and "Geeareohdoubleyou" which provide an intense musical rush.
The second half slows down a bit but does not sacrifice quality songwriting. "Our Drive to the Sun/Can a Man Mark it" and "Human Contact" display the maturity of the band, not only in their lyrics but in their patience to fully realize songs approaching six minutes. The handful of songs left round out the album with lysergic delight ("8 Ladies", "Tiny Men") and fond reminiscence ("About the Movies"). During the recording of this album the band had virtually no interference or interruptions and were left to create what must be considered a pinnacle moment, not just for the band but for the state of music in general. Sadly, also during the recording of this album, their label, Island, was merging with another. When the band turned it in, the label had no idea what to do with it and didn't promote it at all. Therefore it went unrecognized by the masses, which is criminally unfortunate because this album could have become a 90's classic but is instead a cult favorite. Listen and you'll see why.

Swayed by Amazon reviewers,

I take more faith in Amazon reviewers than I do in professional critics. So much so that I purchased this recording purely on the advice of those below. It is an outstanding recording. Take a full stick of pure power pop, melt it in a half-cup of "Pet Sounds", add a few dashes of psychedelia, and then shake it all up with some garage-mod inspiration and you end up with "Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb". This is truly a pop record to carry into the next millenium. It was said to hear that one of the band members died in 1999. Even if the band fails to recover, they have left behind a little masterpiece. Thanks to all the reviewers who turned me on to this fine recording!

The most powerful album of all time?,
By Andrew Bromley (England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb (Audio CD)
Is this the most powerful album of all time? I think it is. The album dives straight in with the wonderful Field Day Jitters. Quirky lyrics, powerful guitar work, wonderful drumming. Waited a Light Year changes the mood. A quite masterful song, that slowly builds up into a crashing cresendo. I love listening to that wonderful bass line in the final parts of Light Year. Your socks have no name is another magic moment on this album, this song perfectly sums up the album's strange but humourous lyrics. Yes, this album will even make you SMILE :O) About the Movies is my all time favourite song. With various musical changes, catchy lyrics and great guitar work. A few listens and this song will be permently ETCHED into your brain. You will be singing the line, 'That is why that's the way we watch the movies' on random and sometimes embarassing occasions. The album has its more moody moments such as Human Contact and Pillar. These songs add depth and diversity to this masterpiece. This is a stunning album. Your record collection is not complete without it.
