Biography

Biography by Jason Ankeny

Like the Velvet Underground, their most obvious influence, the chart success of the Jesus and Mary Chain was virtually nonexistent, but their artistic impact was incalculable; quite simply, the British group made the world safe for white noise, orchestrating a sound dense in squalling feedback which served as an inspiration to everyone from My Bloody Valentine to Dinosaur… Read more in Amazon's Jesus & Mary Chain Store

Editorial Reviews

Calmer but just as powerful, 1994’s STONED & DETHRONED was their last for Blanco y Negro and they went out with the high notes of "God Help Me" featuring guest vocalist Shane MacGowan and "Sometimes Always" spotlighting Mazzy Star front woman Hope Sandoval’s ambient vocals. Plus the stand-outs "Come On" and "Never Saw It Coming." DVD Side, All songs in high resolution stereo plus bonus videos for "Sometimes Always," "Come On," and "Snakedriver."

3.0 out of 5 stars A 5-star album that loses 2 stars for copy protection, July 19, 2006

This is one of my favorite albums of all time; I know it isn't the best Jesus and Mary Chain album, but it is very personal for me and I like it an awful lot.

But, I am very disappointed that the CD-side cannot be read by my computer and, hence, cannot be copied on to the ipod. It saddens me to give this 3 stars. Who on earth is going to steal this? It has been gone for a decade and noone even missed the damn thing but for a few geeks like me (and most people buying it probably owned it already anyhow, like me).

followup: to the reviewer who got 'automatic' to copy onto the ipod, I do not know how that worked for you. For me, the CD was physically unreadable- the hardware itself spun the disc around and around making a terrible noise once every 10 seconds or so. It is a DVD-rom drive so I don't know if that has anything to do with it (but usally the drive reads CDs perfectly well). maybe it is not copy protection but a hardware incompatibility issue; i'll look into it.

5.0 out of 5 stars OMFG, August 15, 2006
This review is from: The Jesus and Mary Chain: Stoned & Dethroned (Audio CD)
I never write Amazon reviews.

I just popped in Stoned & Dethroned DVDA from this DualDisc.

WORTH EVERY PENNY

I have heard this album a million times, it's never sounded this good.

I was really on the fence about buying it due to the cost, how many lousy DualDiscs I have heard lately, and the fact that I already owned every JAMC CD.

TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY worth the money - make sure you have a DVDA setup to listen to it on. Otherwise, probably not worth $13.99

If you don't have a DVDA setup - worth buying one just to listen to this record.

In regards to the copyright protection...

I recently picked up the DualDisc version of Automatic by the JAMC, and when I tried to load it into iTunes, it wouldn't extract the audio. I quit iTunes, ejected the disc and tried again. It worked. It was slow, but I was eventually able to load it into iTunes, and subsequently my iPod. Give it another couple tries.
