Book Description

October 27, 2009
This illustrated edition of the bold, momentous book written by Pope Benedict XVI is beautifully adorned with reproductions of classic works by a veritable pantheon of classic painters—from Tiepolo to Chagall. Begun before his election to the papacy, the book contains masterfully cogent and accessible essays on the life of Jesus, including his baptism, his temptation in the desert, the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord’s Prayer, the disciples, the parables, the principal images of John’s Gospel, Peter’s confession and Jesus’s Transfiguration, and Jesus’s two self-descriptions, "Son of Man" and "Son." Pope Benedict XVI responds to the revisionist historical literature that makes Jesus a man of his time and place, and he discusses recent archaeological, historical, anthropological, and sociological research. As sensitive as it is erudite and brilliant, this edition is lavishly illustrated with handsome reproductions of classical depictions of Jesus by a roster of eminent artists, including Caravaggio, Tintoretto, Veronese, Bellini, Kandinsky, Gauguin, Matisse, and many others.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A handsome new gift edition of the life of Christ, this is the first book authored by Pope Benedict XVI since his election to the papacy—with reproductions from many of the world’s greatest painters.

"The distinguished art publisher Rizzoli International has just released a deluxe illustrated edition of Pope Benedict XVI's Jesus of Nazareth (hardcover, $60). It contains over 120 full-color plates, reproductions of classical depictions of Jesus by a host of famous artists, including Caravaggio, Gaugin and Matisse."
~America magazine

"Pope Benedict XVI's book about Jesus, the man, is back and illuminated!  With its release coinciding with the holiday season, Jesus of Nazareth: The Illustrated Edition is a beautifully put together book."
~San Francisco Book Review

About the Author

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected Pope Benedict XVI on April 19, 2005, and became the 264th successor to Peter as the "Vicar of Jesus Christ." He may well be the most accomplished theologian to be elected Pope in modern times. Beginning in 1981 he spent over 20 years as the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a role often depicted as the "defender of the faith." Mons. Gianfranco Ravasi is the current President of the Pontifical Council for Culture.

This review is from: Jesus of Nazareth: The Illustrated Edition (Hardcover)
I have the audiobook edition of "Jesus of Nazareth" and wanted a printed edition for reference. I keep going back to it, again and again. The illustrated edition had just become available, so I opted for it and was amazing at received so beautiful a book at that price. I leave it out on the coffee table, show it to everyone, recommend it to anyone who'll listen, etc. It's a perfect gift for a Christian friend or relative. In fact, the reproductions are so gorgeous, you might forget to read this amazing work, and that would be a huge mistake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book by Pope Benedict on Jesus, August 2, 2010

This review is from: Jesus of Nazareth: The Illustrated Edition (Hardcover)
This is the illustrated version of Pope Benedict's book on Jesus. It consists of essays on the life of Jesus and it is accompanied by beautiful classic art masterpieces. The artwork enhances the telling of the stories. They help you to visualize the life of Jesus. You can begin to understand how art spread the faith to many before they were able to read. This is not a book to necessarily read straight through. My recommendation is to take one essay at a time and read it leisurely and meditate on the art that accompanies it. Most of us may not get the opportunity to see these masterpieces firsthand and this is a good way to get an introduction to them. After seeing them I would like to see them in person one day.
