Book Description

November 1999
Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in the renewed quest for the historical Jesus, much of the interest from a skeptical perspective. To correct this imbalance, Jakob van Bruggen offers part 2 of his investigation of the life and teaching of Jesus as found in the Gospel accounts.

In the first volume, Christ on Earth, he surveys the Gospel narratives to determine what they can tell us about the historical life of Jesus. In this companion volume, he focuses on the message found in those narratives. In both volumes he reaffirms an orthodox interpretation of Jesus life and death in response to skeptical positions.

Van Bruggen begins with a richly detailed survey of the social and religious context of first-century Judaism, dealing particularly with the various religious and political groups and the place of John the Baptist as a prophetic forerunner to Jesus. A knowledge of those details, he maintains, is imperative for understanding how the message of the Gospels would have been received and interpreted by its first-century audience.

The author then turns, in successive sections, to the fundamental issues involved in considering the meaning of Jesus message:

What did Jesus mean when he spoke of the coming kingdom of God, and what would first-century Jews (with national and political hopes) have understood by that term? What was the meaning of the terms used by Jesus and others to describe his role (Son of Man, Son of David, Son of God, etc.)? What was the sacrificial meaning of Jesus suffering and death? Who now are the people of God? What can be affirmed about the future coming of Christ and the abiding presence of the Spirit?

An appendix considers the importance of the Pharisees. Together with his earlier Christ on Earth, this volume offers a thoroughly researched and well-considered survey of the Gospel accounts of the life and ministry of Jesus.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In an era when many want to pick and choose what in Scripture can contribute to describing Jesus, it is refreshing to read a book on him that takes the testimony of the whole of Scripture seriously. Jesus the Son of God interacts fully with and assesses critical scholarship, especially the more skeptical elements of the European study of Jesus. It treats the background to the life of Jesus as well as the key elements of his life and ministry competently. The work contains many insightful proposals about such criticism and how to put the gospel details and portraits together. Some will convince; others may not, but each is worthy of reflection. Most importantly, it sheds solid light on its main concern, the person and work of Jesus. -- Darrell L. Bock, Research Professor for New Testament Studies, Dallas Theological Seminary

It is good to have Jakob van Bruggens Jesus the Son of God available in English. Van Bruggen has written another solid book that will serve a broad range of readers very well. This book will make a superb text, but it also contains discussion that the expert will find useful and insightful. -- Craig A. Evans, Trinity Western University

5.0 out of 5 stars very good!, June 14, 2001
This review is from: Jesus the Son of God: The Gospel Narratives as Message (Paperback)
Van Bruggen represents the best of German conservative scholarship. He interacts with recent American & German scholarship. If only all Germans were as clear thinking as he! Not all of Bruggen's work convinces but he offers fresh analysis of theological questions (his treatment of the 'Son of Man' issue is superb).

This little book is excellent for its price and should be consulted side-by-side with the portrait of Jesus by Tom Wright and even perhaps Ed Sanders.
