I found this book by a fluke as I was reading reviews on Crazy Love. An individual mentioned how they were put in tremendous bondage over reading the conditions one must meet in order to avoid being labeled a "lukewarm" Christian, meaning NOT a Christian. The angst and doubt this created within this person was overwhelming. They then went on to recommend this book by Kruger that finally brought hope and healing. I have to admit I was skeptical, I had never heard of the author and it had only one review.

But all I can say to begin with is WOW. I don't think I have ever underlined almost an entire book before. Granted it is a very short book with about 70 pages but there are no words wasted and no fluff. There is a fair amount of good repetition because, well honestly the concepts are so foreign to our religious traditions that we need it. (They are foreign to our mind yet are familiar to our soul). He writes in such a beautiful and even poetic way that reflects a solid and vibrant faith in the Triune God that all I could keep thinking was, 'where has this guy been hiding?'

I would say that Mr. Kruger has provided and distilled for us a beautiful picture of the Christus Victor model of the atonement from Scripture (he also cites Athanasius and others). This is an aspect of the cross the Church has forgotten and abandoned even though it had been the prominent view in the early Church and beyond while our legal view of Penal Substitutionary Atonement was formed at the Reformation. I believe Kruger would say the CV is the ONLY view to be taken (?) as far as what was occurring at the cross. I do not yet know what to conclude about that. I am currently studying the spectrum of models of the atonement.

This is an exceptional deep book on the death of Jesus and what He accomplished. Stunning when we come to understand all that we have been brought into through Jesus' great work.

C. Baxter Kruger manages to plumb in a short, concise book, an ocean of deep, much-needed truths in our modern-day understanding of Christianity. Evangelicals, steeped in a steady diet of the Puritan's version of an angry deity ought to put this little book at the tip-top of their reading list and get ready to have the Scriptures pull down every wrong structure of the current picture of God they can imagine.

Kruger manages to unwrap the mystery of Jesus as the second Adam found in Paul's short statements in Romans and serve it up to us in a form that is not only understandable, but rings true with the whole of the Scriptures.

Finally, what made this little book even more enjoyable was the clear, yet passionate way it was written. I have tried to tackle both T.F. Torrence and Athanasius to no avail. Baxter speaks clearly and resoundingly of the love of God in a way the Western church is absolutely desperate for! I pray more folks find this little gem.

This is one of if not THE best books I've ever read on the subject of the fall, and the importance of Adam versus Jesus. I've always read 1 Corinthians 15:22, Romans 5:18, 2 Corinthians 5:14, etc., which all point to the efficacy of Jesus over Adam, and that whatever happened in and to Adam was superseded in like manner- in Christ, but I had nowhere to go with my questions, because anytime I would mention the idea that ALL of humanity seemed to be incorporated in Christ, I would be called a universalist, etc. this book and this author (whom I have come to know personally) speak truth in ways that I have always known, yet never even dared to dream- especially coming from a scared and broken "evangelical" upbringing. If you have questions about your relationship with the Triune God, and how he relates to you, and how we are to know of his love, then check this book out. That being said, if you're not willing to admit that much of what you learned over the years may be wrong, then perhaps you should wait it out until the Holy Spirit says you're ready for this- it's awesome!!!

This book and author does an outstanding job in opening the eyes of your heart to see our Father as He REALLY, TRULY IS! A heart of Love-without the schizophrenic anger and harsh heart that needed to be satisfied for the sins against HIm by humanity that is taught today in many churches.

There is SO MUCH more to the cross than Jesus dying for my sins. To leave it at just that is far less than He intends. Kruger takes you to places in His heart that you long to go.

Excellent book. Not a slow read, nor will you just read it once.

This small book brings a wonderful revelation of the perfect love relationship between Father,Son and Holy Spirit which we're invited to join! Two quotes: "To see ourselves seated with Christ at the Father's right hand is to see ourselves loved and cherished, embraced and accepted by the Father, delighted in; to know untold relief and hope and peace and the deepest of all assurances." Like the prodigal, why would we choose to live in a pigpen; "while all the while, an utterly glorious day filled with staggering beauty and irrepressible joy has been created for us by the overflowing philantrophy of our Triune God." Good reading!
