Shaft Length Not As Advertized,

This review is from: Jet 577110 JSB-10L 10-Inch Buffer and Sander (Tools & Home Improvement)
Buffer just arrived directly from Amazon. Seemed like a pretty good deal since the thing is heavy and shipping was free. Trouble is that the measured length of the 5/8" arbor shaft is only 2 inches, not 3 inches as stated in the product description. I had already ordered buffs intending to stack them on the shaft. They now won't fit, so I'll have to figure something else out. Buyer beware.

It's a nice large machine, and seems to run smooth. Mine came with a bunch of sleeves to fit over the 1" shaft, as well as four sets of flanges; 2 1", and 2 5/8".I plan on using mine as a buffer, but you can't use more than two buffs on the stubby 5/8" portion of the shaft; about 1" of buff thickness is the maximum. This might be a real concern if you plan on doing any real buffing or polishing. A special nut will be necessary to be able to gang as many buffs on the one inch shaft as necessary, ***and*** have it close to the end of the shaft. Luckily, I have a lathe and this is not a problem. This will necessitate buying buffs with a 1" arbor hole. Baldors have a stepped shaft that eliminates the above problem, but they are also very expensive, so I can't fault it too much. Finally, It's made in China. The base casting is pretty rough, and the paint isn't the greatest. Common concerns with Chinese machinery, but I kind of hoped the JET would be Taiwanese. Oh well. For the power and very long shafts, I have found nothing as inexpensive that even remotely compares.

Quality built runs smooth and quiet all the power you'll ever need .Only problem that I had was locating the right accesories such as the pneumatic sanding drums , buffing wheels and proper size sleeves. Amazon could offer a more easy source for these items.

Not for me,

First ship would not run or start and was returned. Second ship would run but both bearings heated up and bound the shaft. Due to an immediate need I had to shim the end bells out to loosen the bearing races. Still sounds kind of rough. Amazon was 100% with a quick return and replacement. Turned a disaster into a mere disapointment.

Buffing Metal with JSB-10L,

Although Amazon had a good price, I decided to purchase this product with the stand from a local upscale tool supply store. My initial concern was the low speed of the motor is not ideal for polishing aluminum and stainless. However this unit does a fine job and since it is low speed it can be used for plastics and woodworking as well.My initial foray into polishing was with a cheap Harbor Freight 3600 RPM unit theat cost 10% of the Jet. I can definitively state you get what you pay for. Unlike the cheap unit, the JET buffer does not load down. You can apply moderate pressure and it keeps right on polishing. Getting the correct 10" polishing pads is a challenge, but a 8" HF pad can be used if you don't mind the shedding and a restriction of 1 pad thickness since you will need to use the HF mounting washer. The JET stand does a great job at stabilizing the buffer even without mounting it to the floor. However, the dust collector attachment has difficulty catching the fibers from the polishing wheel, so expect material to collect on the floor. Based upon initial tests I highly recommend the 10L for performance and the matching Stand for both aesthetics and function. My only reason for not giving this 5 stars is due to the limited time I've spent with it (one day) and the mediocre performace of the dust collector attachment which could indicate a need for a large collection unit.. |
