This dust collector was entirely unsatisfactory and has been replaced. It now sits all alone outside and is not being used and nobody interested in buying it used.
1. Very hard to clean the filter.
2. Very fine dust like from a drum or wide belt sander plugs it up almost instantly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good dust collector for a small shop, November 27, 2005

This review is from: Jet 708630 DC-650TS 2-Stage 1 HP 650 CFM Dust Collector (Tools & Home Improvement)
I was in search of a good two-stage dust collector that would not break the bank. My requirements were that it be small, portable, and use a canister filter rather than a bag.

One of my options was to buy a standard two-bag collector and install a garbage-can separator before it. This didn't meet the filter criteria. Also, it's not very portable because there are two pieces to move, not one.

Another option was to buy the larger JET DC-1100CK to get the canister filter. But, that model is not a two-stage collector. To have that capability a trash can separator would again be added, eliminating the portability.

After researching every brand I could find, I settled on the JET DC-TS650. It has a canister filter and sits on top of a trash can, just like the plastic separator lids. I went to the local home center and purchased a 30-gallon metal can to go with it.

Hits:

-Canister filter is very effective at containing fine dust.
-Separator system works extremely well even when bits of wood or nails are sucked in. Nothing ever hits the impeller.
-Much quieter than expected. I'm used to hearing the howl from larger units. This one is actually not bad!

Misses:

-Included hose is not very long. Buy a 10-foot section and some connectors for your equipment.
-Lid is rather flimsy. The motor casing is solid metal. The lid that it is attached to is only plastic. The day it falls apart is the day that I attach the motor to the metal lid that was included with the trash can.
-Air leaks. Between the motor and the canister filter there is a duct in the metal that is formed by two pieces that are bolted together. The seal is not air-tight and allows some fine dust back into the room.
-Small filter. The canister filter is rather small for this application. While it does perform quite admirably, it will clog faster than expected. Part of this is due to the bottom of it being sealed rather than having a container at the bottom to collect the fine dust. If at all possible, this should be modified to have a coffee can or tomato can under the filter.
-Price. There is no way this dust collector is worth $349. I bought it on sale with a good coupon locally on Massachusetts' annual tax-free day. I believe most of the cost is in the canister filter, but am looking at alternative sources for a replacement when this one wears out.

All-in-all, this is actually very effective dust collector. I have been using it on a Rigid contractor-style table saw, a compound miter saw, and a home-made router table that uses a large (3.25 HP) router. Even when spinning a 3.5" horizontal panel-raising bit (with back cutter) the collector is able to keep up with the amount of wood chips generated.

In spite of the "misses" I note above, do not be afraid to buy this! The fit and finish is quite good. The unit is solidly build and will last a long time. Just try to get it when it's on sale, rather than paying full price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Garbage Can Lid Model for Garage Use, June 7, 2005
This review is from: Jet 708630 DC-650TS 2-Stage 1 HP 650 CFM Dust Collector (Tools & Home Improvement)
I own this unit. I can not give an opinion of the longevity of the motor, however it is an excellent choice for garage and hobbyiest woodworkers.

The unit fit well on a 44 gallon Rubbermaid container. The unit is slightly larger than a houshold rug vauum cleaner. The housing of the motor is aluminum while the lid looks like PVC.

The unit comes with a clear 4" diameter hose that is really about 2 to 4 feet too short to be usefull for easy set up. I use a twist fit and a quick disconnect as the only add-on to complete this unit.

I am very satisfied with this unit for my needs. I took advantage of the WHM tool group 100 rebate for second purchases and Amazon.com had a 25 usd off orders over 199 coupon, to make the unit 225. This is a resonable price. I think list of 349 is very high though for the type of unit this is.

This dust collector was entirely unsatisfactory and has been replaced. It now sits all alone outside and is not being used and nobody interested in buying it used.
1. Very hard to clean the filter.
2. Very fine dust like from a drum or wide belt sander plugs it up almost instantly.
3. lid is heavy and inconvenient and needs a very tall can to keep from sucking stuff from the trash can into the filter.
4. Not sure I ever got even near 650 cfm. Doesn't even work on one machine very well.
5. Usual crappy tech support from Jet, Performax, Delta ETC. You know when they all are under one corporation, tech support will go down the tubes.
5. Reccomendation: buy something more powerful like a cyclone type DC.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not completly satisfied, December 10, 2005
This review is from: Jet 708630 DC-650TS 2-Stage 1 HP 650 CFM Dust Collector (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have a wood shop in my garage where I do cabinets, wood turning.
The Canister filter clogs very fast, I installed a large 5 micron bag that lasts atleast 10 times longer before I need to clean it. It is loud compared to my 2 bag Jet 650CFM. I see no advanatages to having a 2 stage dust collector (there may be better designs out there). My 2 bag Jet 650CFM works great, it is easy to clean and it is quiet. Install thin wall metal pipe if you can it does make a big difference over the 4" flex hose. I had the 4" flex hose and was able to get 4" thin wall metal pipe from work for free with long sweeping curves. It made a big difference.

4.0 out of 5 stars 2-stage dust collector for Small Shop, November 9, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Jet 708630 DC-650TS 2-Stage 1 HP 650 CFM Dust Collector (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is a well engineered tool for the function it serves and I am very happy with its performance in my small shop.

I just don't undersatnd why Jet decided to mount a relatively heavy motor on such a light plastic base!! Every time I need to move the top, I am all so fearfull that I am going to break the base plate (and I know I will one day!).

Another easy improvment would be to add a few dollars to its cost and provide a few extra feet of hose.

Filter clogs up almost immediately and is difficult to clean! Replaced filter with pillow case and a little dust gets thru but at least it will clean out machines.
