This is not reassuring in terms of consistent quality.

This material is very brittle on the spool, and breaks easily when feeding into the printer.

Also, the name American Instrument implies its made in the USA - but it's not.

Color Name: OrangeSize Name: 3.00mm Verified Purchase
It prints cleanly and precisely at 220-250'C without too much problem sticking to a 100'C kaptop tape bed. Nice sharp results with no stringing, dripping or blobbing at all (although the extrusion thickness varies a bit because the filament changes sizes, see below). It had trouble feeding reliably at printing speeds over 60mm/s (with a 0.2mm layer height on a 0.4mm nozzle) but was OK at 60mm/s. (I often print at 120mm/s PLA or ABS in this same configuration)

The color becomes a bit muted and a little uneven after going through the printer, and darkens as it cools. The resulting part has a satin finish. The filament on the spool has an uneven fishing, ranging from matte to gloss.

The biggest issue is that it snaps very easily coming off the spool, such that the printer cannot be left unattended. The filament snapped four times in a 2hr print (total 2.5m filament used). I've got a pretty relaxed feedpath and never had an issue with PLA or ABS snapping during feeding. It also snaps off in your hand when trying to load it into the extruder. The brittleness varies through the roll, with some sections more flexible and others more brittle. This is not reassuring in terms of consistent quality.

Despite the brittle filament, the resulting part is somewhat flexible (more like ABS than PLA)

The second big issue is the diameter is inconsistent. It varies from 2.80 to 3.20mm

Update 1:
I've come across some warping issues, about the same as ABS.

It smells less strongly and less offensively than ABS, but still not a pleasant smell (think melting styrofoam)

It does not bridge very well at all (probably related to the lack of stringing).

Update 2:
I've come across bubbles in the filament, so I'm revising my review to 1 star and returning it. Three strikes and you're out.

This material is very brittle on the spool, and breaks easily when feeding into the printer.

It requires temperatures in excess of 255C to extrude, and is not smooth until 260C.

I tried the White 3mm HIPS, and it changed color repeatedly during printing, from Ivory to Beige and back again. Apparently very poor quality control over the composition of the material or poor mixing of the components.

On the spool it is translucent, and you can see coils that are very shiny on the surface, and others that have a matte surface. I'm not entirely sure what that means, but it can't be good.

I would not recommend this filament, even at its fairly low price. I threw 95% of the spool I bought in the trash.

THis Jet HIPS filament works great! I go through several spools per week and have not had any problems with this filament. I've tried most of their 1.75mm filament colors and they have all worked great!

Talked to the manager - they import, but their Amazon page says very clearly - USA. Also, the name American Instrument implies its made in the USA - but it's not. I'm ok with Chinese filament, but don't claim Made in the USA unless you are.

I purchased a roll of 3mm HIPS and have not had the problems noted by another reviewer who got bad product. While the material is significantly more brittle than 3mm ABS (though less brittle than 1.75mm ABS,) I have not had it break on 2.5+ hour print jobs. I have not noted variations in diameter (though I'm only spot checking,) and it's feeding without hesitation at 235C.

Unless mashed together at extrusion, it is relatively easy to break off from ABS. 'Whiskers' are extremely easy (brittle) to break at all points, though various rafts I've printed are quite flexible (up until bent 180 degrees whereupon they snap.)

I'm not dissatisfied, though I haven't tried HIPS from other vendors to compare. I wish it was more price comparable with ABS or PLA. I'm happy enough to order a spool of 1.75mm as well (the 3mm was a mistake on my part, but I'll use it.)
