I just received this hose, and I so far I am disappointed. First I'll describe my feelings with regard to the packaging, then to the impressions of the hose itself. The hose arrived in a very large box, so prior to opening it I felt confident that the hose was going to survive the shipping. Ha! Inside the large box was a lot of packing material, and under that packing material was a smaller box. Stuffed and smashed and squished inside the smaller box was this 10 foot, 5 inch diameter hose. The hose was totally folded over onto itself FLAT in many places.

In removing the hose I was shocked as to how pliable it felt. In my opinion it was as pliable as the 5 inch clear hose that Jet also sells. With the damage due to the packaging, the hose was not going to be able to not collapse onto iself. Parts of it were nice and round, other parts were too flat, and could not be easily straightened. The extreme flexing and squishing that it underwent when it was packaged also showed itself in the typical discoloration associated with too much stress on the plastic material.

I immediately called Amazon, and they will be sending out a replacement hose and I will be returning the "broken" one. Kudos to Amazon on this. However, they cannot guarantee that the next one will be packaged any better. Sigh. All that the packagers need to do is to ELIMINATE THE SMALL INNER BOX and just put it in the BIG OUTSIDE box (hint hint). This is the second item that I have recently received with poor packaging. Amazon really needs to address and fix their packaging and shipping problems. They are going downhill rapidly.

I plan on using the hose for 5 foot pieces to connect to my tools. It is nice that the hose is flexible, but I really was expecting something a bit stiffer. While the hose might be able to take some abuse in the woodshop, it definitely cannot take the abuse of careless shipping. In the way that it was packaged, they could have fit 3-4 hoses in the outer box -- all of them non-usable.

I will post again when the replacement comes, but I know that I will not be totally satisfied. I wish I knew of a better hose with a bit less flexibility and a bit more stength. It is possible that my perceived lack of strength was due to the many now defective sections of the hose that won't allow a nice round shape. There is no doubt in my mind that the hose as was shipped would totally collapse if all the blast gates were shut on my dust collector. I am hopping that a properly shipped hose would work as expected.

10/12/2005 Update:

The replacement hose came in. This time it was in a BIG box with lots of air bubble packs. Unfortunately the tape job sucked on the box. Huge box, one piece of tape. Of course the box was opened. There is no way that the tape would hold. $10 of packing bubbles and $.02 worth of tape. HELLO!!!

The hose itself was in great shape compared to the original. No kinks, no sharp bends, no stessed plastic. I have no doubt that it will handle my dust collection needs. The first one was so beat up it would have collapsed. I'll update again after I get the hose installed.

I'd probably rate the hose 4 stars right now. I'd rate the packaging 0 stars.

This hose is a good choice for many applications. For using on a portable tools buy the 20'. 10' just isn't long enough even in my small shop. This product doesn't kink. I would buy it again

Does the job. Not as flexible as I would like. However, this was the only 5" flex hose I found avaiable.

I bought 40 feet of this hose to make final connections to my eight power tools. It works well and is easy to work with. Bending radius can be quite tight if necessary. I have a two horsepower collector and cannot even begin to distort the hose with a total intentional blockage. I use the two inch variety to pick up dust on the blade guard of my radial arm and chop saw. Good product!!
