More About the Author

Novelist, playwright, and biographer Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-80) is widely considered one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century. His major works include "No Exit," "Nausea," "The Wall," "The Age of Reason," "Critique of Dialectical Reason," "Being and Nothingness," and "Roads to Freedom," an allegory of man's search for commitment, and not, as the man at the off-licence says, an everyday story of French country folk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story; elements of love, war and existentialism, June 30, 1997
By A Customer
What if you had just one chance to avert disaster? What if you found your soul mate, and had 24 hours to establish a love? What if these opportunities did not present themselves until after you are dead? In Jean Paul Sartre's "Les Jeux Sont Faits," (The Die is Cast), the afterlife, love and exisentialism are all explored. The main characters Pierre and Eve meet and fall in love in the afterlife, and have one chance to return to life and avert the resistance movement Pierre and his comrades have planned. The story is gripping and the plot is imaginative. Les Jeux Sont Faits presents many themes and ideas: taking responsibility for ones' actions, Sartre's view on love and war, a thinly veiled contempt for the German invasion of Paris, classicism and fate. I enjoyed this book very much and encouraged me to learn more about Jean Paul Sartre. The ending surprised me, and I must admit it made me cry! I read this book for my grade 11 French class. My class enjoyed it, and so will you!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book, July 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Les Jeux Sont Faits (French Edition) (Paperback)
I was amazed by this book, I don't care too much for most existentialist fiction, but I was riveted by this novel. As I read, I became engrossed by the characters, and was on the edge of my seat waiting for what would happen to them. The message that one must commit to love and not let outside influences impede it, is a message we here far too infrequently. Instead of a story where one must die for love, we get a story where to live, one must love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sartre at his best, November 23, 1997
By
champaigne@bigfoot.com (Edgewood, MD (via Stratford, CT)) - See all my reviews
My French teacher had our class read this book in the eleventhgrade. It was the first book by Sartre I read and I was fascinated by Sartre, existentialism, and other great existentialist writers, Camus in particular. It has been a long time since that hign school classroom, so the details of the story are fuzzy in my mind. However, an 18 year search for a copy of this book will end the day it arrives in my mail box. Thank you, Amazon! Et merci beaucoup, M. Sartre!!
