5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story; elements of love, war and existentialism
What if you had just one chance to avert disaster? What if you found your soul mate, and had 24 hours to establish a love? What if these opportunities did not present themselves until after you are dead? In Jean Paul Sartre's "Les Jeux Sont Faits," (The Die is Cast), the afterlife, love and exisentialism are all explored. The main characters Pierre and Eve...

3.0 out of 5 stars Movie
I am reading this in French class. it is ok although not great. the inconsistancies are sort of confusing but the theme is good. i like the satire in it. we are looking for a copy of the movie for VHS so if anyone knows where we could buy this to watch in class, with or without captions, that would be great. email me at moonshadow@pwshift.com if u know. thanks

The main characters Pierre and Eve meet and fall in love in the afterlife, and have one chance to return to life and avert the resistance movement Pierre and his comrades have planned. The story is gripping and the plot is imaginative. Les Jeux Sont Faits presents many themes and ideas: taking responsibility for ones' actions, Sartre's view on love and war, a thinly veiled contempt for the German invasion of Paris, classicism and fate. I enjoyed this book very much and encouraged me to learn more about Jean Paul Sartre. The ending surprised me, and I must admit it made me cry! I read this book for my grade 11 French class. My class enjoyed it, and so will you!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book, July 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Les Jeux Sont Faits (French Edition) (Paperback)
I was amazed by this book, I don't care too much for most existentialist fiction, but I was riveted by this novel. As I read, I became engrossed by the characters, and was on the edge of my seat waiting for what would happen to them. The message that one must commit to love and not let outside influences impede it, is a message we here far too infrequently. Instead of a story where one must die for love, we get a story where to live, one must love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sartre at his best, November 23, 1997

My French teacher had our class read this book in the eleventhgrade. It was the first book by Sartre I read and I was fascinated by Sartre, existentialism, and other great existentialist writers, Camus in particular. It has been a long time since that hign school classroom, so the details of the story are fuzzy in my mind. However, an 18 year search for a copy of this book will end the day it arrives in my mail box. Thank you, Amazon! Et merci beaucoup, M. Sartre!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A masterful work., June 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Les Jeux Sont Faits (French Edition) (Paperback)
This masterful work explores the meaning of life after death and finds it to be absourd. Is there purpose in life in the first place? What are any of us doing here? Is our life on earth vain preperations for the life to come? this book explores all these questions and more. Sartre eloquently weaves these questions into a cohesive tale as seen in the after-life journeys of Pierre and Eve.

5.0 out of 5 stars If at first you don't love this book, try it again., August 12, 1998

What more can you ask from a book? It's in French, it breaks stereotypes, satirizes and exposes the stuffy rich, and unites a blue-collar hero with a stunningly beautiful upperclass heroine. It is a tragically beautiful masterpiece that tells us both that love is all we need, and not enough, and that all barriers can be overcome, it one would just try.

5.0 out of 5 stars C'est magnifique!, July 23, 1999
This review is from: Les Jeux Sont Faits (French Edition) (Paperback)
This has been my favorite book since I first read it, more than 5 years ago, and it still has a place of honor on my bedside table. Sartre's tale of Pierre and Eve is simply riveting. This is one of the most thought-provoking books I've read - and you don't need to know a lot about literature to enjoy it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A riveting tale from start to finish, June 22, 1998
It makes me laugh, all of the different translations of the title. A direct translation is "The Games are Done." I read this novel this year as a sophomore in French 4. My teacher, who majored in French literature, analyzed this novel with us, and each of her students came away with a better understanding of the book. Personally, I loved it. It made you think, but it wasn't so obviously philosophizing that it would turn off someone my age. Sartre's philosophies were woven into the story, and you come away with a feeling of enhanced "smartness." :o) Also, if you ever want to impress a Frenchman with what you've read, just say, "J'ai lu Les Jeux Sont Faits." I'd recommend this book to anyone.
