This is a fun and informative read, an unorthodox and humorous popularization of Jewish history BCE which is nevertheless based on solid historical scholarship. It reminded it me a lot of "Asimov's Guide To The Bible", which is just about the highest compliment I could offer a book of this genre.
However it could have benefitted from a good editor. The writer is a popular blogger, but the breezy, flippant tone that works in a blog post is sometimes jarring in a longer work. There are also the occasional syntactical infelicity and several places where the narrative switches repeatedly back and forth between past tense and present tense constructions.

This is a well thought out, and very unorthodox, view of the history of the Jewish people, from its inception until the first century BCE. It relies on the current reasearch in history, but takes an irreverent and often funny voice. It is rife with details that even those knowledgeable in the history of the times will find new. In short a good read.
