4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read
I never know whether to buy a Gena Showalter book. I absolutely love some of her books and yet haven't been able to finish other ones. This one wasn't as good as the fabulous HEART OF THE DRAGON but is still well worth reading. Gray James is sent to Atlantis by the Otherworld Bureau of Investigations (OBI) to obtain the Jewel of Dunamis. According to the Book of Ra...

3.0 out of 5 stars You are the weakest link
Jewel of Atlantis is the 2nd of a (so far) 3 books series on the peoples of Atlantis and in my opinion is so far the weakest link. The characters interacted with each other fine, but individually were developed in a very strange way. There was no real explanation of why they dreamed of each other and no real explanation of what the hero, Grayson James, was going to do...

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read, February 1, 2006
I never know whether to buy a Gena Showalter book. I absolutely love some of her books and yet haven't been able to finish other ones. This one wasn't as good as the fabulous HEART OF THE DRAGON but is still well worth reading. Gray James is sent to Atlantis by the Otherworld Bureau of Investigations (OBI) to obtain the Jewel of Dunamis. According to the Book of Ra Dracas, the Jewel of Denamis can predict the future and ascertain if someone is lying or being honest. Unfortunately for Gray, the Book also details a world full of vampires, demons, nymphs, and other creatures only found in myths. In the midst of fighting for his life, Gray hears a female's voice that guides him to safety and to her rescue from Marina, Queen of the Demons. The female identifies herself as Jewel, but doesn't tell him she is the Jewel he is searching for. In the process of rescuing Jewel, Gray is injured by both a demon and a vampire, creating a poison in him that would have killed him if not for the assistance of Jewel. Gray begins developing both vampire and demon characteristics while he and Jewel fall in love. Darius and Grace reappear from the HEART OF THE DRAGON and play a pivotal role in the conclusion of the novel. Overall, I enjoyed this book although I thought it took Gray too long to figure out that the female Jewel was in actuality the Jewel he was searching for. I particularly enjoyed the world of Atlantis that Ms. Showalter has created.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Amazing, Amazing, February 19, 2006
This book blew me away. I'd come to expect great story telling with Ms.Showalter, owing both The Stone Prince and The Pleasure Slave and also The Heart of the Dragon.
Lovable characters, exciting places, fun scenarios, are what you get everytime, but with Jewel of Atlantis Ms.Showalter really out does herself. I was enthralled. In My opinion THE BACK OF THE BOOK DOES NOT DO IT JUSTICE, it's a much more complicated story line.
Jewel is a darling character who you come to care for, Gray is the perfect blend of Macho and Amusing. He's not too alpha in that it turns you off, he's just enough, and able to tease.
I HOPE SHE STICKS WITH ATLANTIS FOR A FEW MORE BOOKS, I'D BUY THEM ALL.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly polished writing!, February 12, 2006

Gena Showalter has shot forward as one of the best & most prolific fantasy/romance writers around. With new books by Showalter popping onto my wish list almost every month I was eager to read her follow up to the inspired Heart of the Dragon.

Showalter continues to build Atlantis into a vivid world that leaps off the pages. This time we meet far more of the creatures who inhabit the under water kingdoms.Grayson James, a sort of paranormal soldier of fortune, knows that there are weird lands & creatures out there. It's his job to plunder the alien secrets for the betterment & protection of the human race. But when he is sent after the Jewel of Dunamis he nearly meets his doom. The experience changes him...The Jewel ends up being, well Jewel. She's the woman who has haunted his dreams his entire life. She has watched him, through childhood & all the way through adulthood with his dangerous missions & erotic affairs. And now she knows he's coming for her.

Jewel must decide if she reveals her identity to Grayson. They pair up to survive the dangers of Atlantis with absolutly everyone after them. They end up seeking aid from the dragons and we meet up with several well known characters who I hope to see again in more showalter books. What are the vamps up too? Can we see the dragons get naked again in human form? Hmmm, yum.

My only critisism is that the ending was very rushed. Suddenly tho book which had built & built just ended with very little explanation. Maybe it's a tease to keep us interested? Well, I'm hooked!

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommend, October 9, 2009

This review is from: Jewel Of Atlantis (Atlantis, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jewel of Atlantis is a sizable improvement over Heart of the Dragon. For one thing, it was more fun to read. Darius of HotD, with his smothered emotions, is sorely lacking in the sense of humor department, whereas the thoughts of JoA's protagonist, Gray James, are much more entertaining. Also, Jewel felt like a necessary part of a team rather than a tag-along. Jewel and Gray's differing abilities complemented each other well. Neither of them could have accomplished their goals without the other.

JoA also does a better job of explaining details of the various races of beings living in Atlantis, and how Atlantean society works.

The romance between Gray and Jewel was much more believable, and the gradual uncovering of their connection is interesting. Jewel of Atlantis will be worth a re-reading.

The eye-roll factor - only one time was a description so overdone it made my eyes roll.

If you like cold, distant, emotionally-broken heroes then Heart of the Dragon is what you're looking for. If you like something lighter in tone, with characters that will make you chuckle, Jewel of Atlantis provides. The humor sometimes made me think of Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series.

I'm reading these all out of order, but I still love them so much. These two characters were the greatest I've ever read of Gena Showalter's, perhaps even ever. It was a real addicting story and so much fun to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read Series, March 11, 2009

I loved this book, and the rest of the series as well. Gena Showalter has created a beautiful, mystical land, full of intriguing races and a rich history. The characters were well-developed. The heroes: Strong, brave, sexy, brutal yet ... sweet to their chosen mates.

The heroines were bold, daring, courageous women you could root for.

I'm ready for more in this series. I want to revisit Atlantis again and again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story of adventure!, February 19, 2009
This review is from: Jewel Of Atlantis (Atlantis, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
I recently discovered Gena Showalter last year and once I read a couple of her books, I could not stop myself from buying the others just to read her fantastic tales!

Gena gets into the heads of her characters so well that she literally brings them to life. Every time I read one of her books, the characters just seem to pop out and I can actually imagine them in my head as I go through the book.

With Gray and Jewel, these two were a wonderful, passionate pair. His need to help the damsel, but never really letting his greed get in the way of what he truely wants. You feel his pain, you feel hers and you can not help but root for them and then feel like you want to slap them for making the bad decision, heh. I love the humor that Gena has herself and that she places in her characters to really make the characters and the story interesting.

Thank you Gena!
