Book Description

July 31, 1999
In many parts of Asia, folk jewellery has disappeared in the wake of modernism. In Nepal, however, where the formidable Himalayas have formed a barrier to outsiders and their influences, native jewellery traditions remain alive and strong. Jewellery in Nepal is worn for decorative, talismanic and investment purposes. Gold jewellery is abundant and its many forms are expressed in unusual sizes: silver, readily available in coin form, is freely used - as are beads of glass, coral, turquoise, amber and agate. In over a dozen trips to Nepal's most inaccessible areas, goldsmith and jewellery designer Hannelore Gabriel has documented the local jewellery worn for both daily and ceremonial decoration.

About the Author

Hannelore Gabriel is a jewelry designer and goldsmith. Serving out an apprenticeship to a master goldsmith in Germany begun at age sixteen, she has since established her own studio, taught at craft schools, lectured in anthropology and art departments of universities, and won numerous awards for her exquisite jewelry creations. Her professional focus on metal art, combined with a love of adventure and a fascination with Himalayan cultures, led her to undertake a scholarly study of Himalayan jewelry, which has lasted over two decades. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This review is from: Jewelry Of Nepal (Hardcover)
Firstly, it is a wonderful photography book. The large color Photos feature women from the many ethnic groups within Nepal, decked out in the most gorgous jewelry! Much attention is given to the jewelry of the Tibetan groups. The text is informative and easy to read. After a long day at the office, I can open this book and be magically transported to an exotic place. If you enjoy learning about Himalayan art and culture, this book is for you!
